”They say you shouldn’t fall in love in a war.
You never know what’s coming.”
I was saddened to hear about the passing of director Michael Apted this week. His fascinating ‘Up’ documentary series is one of my all-time favorites.
This fictionalized spy thriller deals a Alan Turing styled character who may have been taken in by an enemy operative and so he joins forces with Kate Winslet to try and discover the truth. It takes a bit for the gears to get into motion but once the plot starts spinning it turns into a mildly interesting espionage mystery.
INTERESTING FACT: This film was produced by Mick Jagger who actually lent the…
"You know, without your glasses, you don't look half bad."
"You know, without my glasses, nor do you."
The most exciting moment in a dull chore of a film in which everyone and everything is on autopilot except Kate Winslet, who infuses her character with spirit and manages to create a distinct performance out of such bland material.
I presume this was on television because The Imitation Game is out at the cinemas. Sadly I don't have many film loving friends or a desire to walk to my local cinema at night for safety reasons, so rather than seeing that like I'd prefer, I thought I'd give this a go.
Some films you just can't get into. I so nearly gave up after 40 minutes because I really wasn't enjoying it. I was bored and found myself reaching for my mobile phone to multi-task. Never a good sign. I stuck with it and kind of wish I hadn't bothered overall.
Part based on reality, but nowhere near gripping enough. Dull and slow at times, it was only as…
Finally watched this, one of my dad’s favourites. While its WWII setting is a typical hallmark of a Dad Movie, mine usually enjoys seeing Nazis get their comeuppance, and there are none to be found here. Instead the enemy becomes the ostensibly impenetrable German Enigma machines, which the British cryptanalysts are tasked with deciphering so they can keep track of naval signals. I can see why there’s some satisfaction to be had from all the decoding, as it’s a little like detective work involving numbers and codes instead of people, but it wasn’t quite as compelling as I’d hoped. It doesn’t help that the decoding process isn’t fully explored/explained, and we’re expected to just trust the process. But the fictional…
At first I thought they had straightwashed Alan Turing, but I quickly realised that the main character wasn't him.
Enigma doesn't feel enigmatic at all, and instead feels mostly dull and uninspired. Conventionally boring.
Kate Winslet is the one that carries the whole thing, and her performance is outstanding, as always. I especially like this line of dialogue between her character and a creepy co-worker:
Creepy mf: D'ya know, without your glasses, you don't look half bad!
Hester Wallace: Do you know, without my glasses, nor do you.

2022 #355
A decent WWII spy thriller that feels far removed from the real-life happenings at Bletchley Park (and completely omits Alan Turing altogether). Still, while it does make use of some historical events, this is striving for gripping rather than factual. On that front, Enigma is mostly successful thanks to the mystery and suspense Michael Apted creates, as well as a great Kate Winslet performance.
A decent thriller but, perhaps more so now that we have a better understanding of what really happened (Turing and The Imitation Game) this falls apart under any examination. The facts are used liberally and, at times, are often frankly insulting to our intelligence. Northam, Winslet and Scott deliver well what they are given though.
This story looks like it should only work on paper, not the screen... but it does. It tells the story of the cracking of the Enigma code with intrigue, and frankly makes something that should be difficult, and even boring, quite fun. The great British cast is used well across the board even down to a small role by Matthew McFayden. Hollander, Scott, Northam, Winslet, and Burrows all add nicely to the story.
2001 Movielog
Solid WW2 movie that takes a refreshing detour to the kind of war movies we’re used to. Concerned with the codebreakers themselves, Apted has no problem making this as tense as any other film in the genre thanks to a solid script, effective pacing and an impressive cast led by Winslet.
