A standard good-animal-vs-bad-animal Tex Avery cartoon, the comedic timing in every gag here is so sharp, they're just as funny or maybe even funnier when you know exactly what's going to happen.
Basically a do-over of Ventriloquist Cat with the cat replaced by a gopher, and given that one of the best jokes in Ventriloquist Cat was the sound of the "meow meow" the cat would make, it's not a neutral replacement. So insofar as we know in hindsight that this has to be around the time that burnout was starting to set in for Tex Avery, I think you can see it, kind of, in how nakedly this is repeating gags from that short and elsewhere in Avery's career. On the other hand, Avery had been repeating his own gags from pretty early on, and this has such breathlessly tight timing that it's still pretty damn funny. It also has some…
Spike wants to bury a bone. Unnamed gopher doesn't want a bone in its home. War erupts between the two, leading to high-frequency gag delivery.
The gopher is a weird mix of Chip 'N Dale and Bugs Bunny, while Spike is just Spike.
Garden Gopher good crazy MGM Cartoon
Kind of cheap-looking animation, and derivative characters on the down side, but on the flip side, it's Tex Avery so there's a pretty high ratio of jokes per minute, and the story's a cute little parable/send-up of the whole King Canute mentality, even if it does end with the singular image of the dog dressed in drag as a female gopher to lure his victim out of his burrow to his doom, being surprised by the fact that (spoiler) there are HUNDREDs of gopher burrows in the garden, and being chased out of his own yard by a giant flood of horny rodents.
Easily the best Spike showcase on the "Tex Avery Screwball Classics Volume 1" Blu-ray.
How many times can you blow up one dog in an animated short? According to this, half a dozen times give or take. Dressing up as a sexy gopher to distract someone is stealing a move from Bugs Bunny’s playbook, but the results here are so hilarious that you don’t even care.
Love this MGM caetoon cos I hate gophers with a passion!
Haha🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣very funny!!!!!! What a masterpiece!!!!! Gopher great villain
Largely, this feels like one more forgettable entry into the whole genre of problems with gophers, which is a surprisingly large genre, all things considered. It does do a decent job of at least pushing a few of the ideas to a more ridiculous level, like the extra limbs. I can't imagine being annoyed enough with any pest to cross dress as another species, though. That may just be me and a lack of passion about lawns (or I guess bones).
The gopher character wasn’t very interesting and I feel like the creativity wasn’t up to Tex Avery’s standards. There was some cross dressing at the end, which was really the only interesting bit.
405: Spike the dog wants to bury his bone and a gopher that’s invaded his yard isn’t having it. It’s such a simple premise that kind of reminded me of a Road Runner cartoon, only this one is fast paced and funny instead of dead ass boring like Jone’s toons end up being.
