i relate to hamlet because i, too, spend most of my time distracting others and procrastinating the things i say i would do
good: reading Hamlet
bad: writing a 10-page essay on Hamlet
hell: being forced to watch this movie in class
Polonius laying dead on the floor after being stabbed while hamlet and his mother make out like 2 meters away
Shakespeare has been responsible for innovating the English language and writing some of the most profound, soul searching drama's ever written.
He's also responsible for the creation of the Emo lifestyle, presented to us in the form of the whiniest, angst-ridden protagonist ever, Hamlet.
This is one of my least favourite Shakespeare plays as its protagonist annoys me to no end. He is indecisive, vague and a nag. The fact that this film understands this so well and doesn't feel the need to stretch it to four hours is one of the reasons I like it so much.
At 130 minutes it feels like a summarised study guide. And that's fine as it is originally a play and doesn't really…
I've always liked Mel Gibson as Hamlet. There was a certain wildness behind the eyes that we now have come to realise was probably genuine craziness! He did play it a little overly frenetic but it fit right in with the other larger than life characters. Helena Bonham Carter's Ophelia was equally balmy and Glenn Close was very convincing, as expected, as Gertrude. Even though this version is a little over dramatic, overall it works for me and is one of my favourite Hamlet adaptions.
