Maybe Hollywood can be proud of a film like this. Who makes an effort, tries to weigh up positions in a balanced way, who controls his cinema of affect in a targeted manner and uses his narrative tricks for the maximum affective effect. The film casts the complex of themes of the decade - terrorism, Guantanamo, freedom, the rule of law, torture - into a form in which to debate them.
Given the high emotional stakes however, the whole thing may not be a debate after all, as Rendition takes a too clear position. But it is precisely the thematization without slipping into overly simple patterns that deserves attention. Vicious circles of hatred and the complete dehumanization in this power system are insights that are weakened by Gyllenhaal's transformation into a supposed semi-happy ending, but fortunately he can no longer get rid of the sinking feeling that the film gave the viewer in his stomach.

Geopolitical post-9/11 dramas were a tough sell...obviously. The troubling ongoing international crises we hear about on the news aren't usually the stories we then want to go pay to see fake versions of in a movie theater. Except for the particularly hyped or irresistibly cast ones ("Syriana", "Body of Lies", "Zero Dark Thirty", "The Hurt Locker", "American Sniper", "Redacted"), I myself avoided many of them at the time (sorry "Lions for Lambs", "Stop-Loss", "Green Zone", this movie, etc.). Now though with some distance, I think I can better appreciate them at last. These are the shenanigans we were dealing with that decade during the so-called war on terror, and while much of it has only grown more complicated and slippery…
