Holy shit, what a fucking relic of the 2000s this thing is. It's silly as hell, highly stylized and overflowing with hip-hop/R&B bangers. Jet Li and Aaliyah's chemistry is off the fucking charts and this baby actually has some great comedic moments and fight sequences. Cradle 2 Tha Grave has always been a big guilty pleasure of mine but this Jet Li/Andrzej Bartkowiak collaboration is one that I would actually classify as a pretty good movie.

The tone and pacing of this film is all over the place with a plot that’s generically silly, but Jet Li’s likable and there’s a few solid moments like the prison break, football game and Li’s fights.
BONUS POINTS to Delroy Lindo who’s the very definition of cool and deserves to be in a million more movies.

Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet gets all of the attention from the late 90s, but that is one Shakespeare modernization that doesn't have Jet Li spraying Anthony Anderson in slow motion with a firehose, or using Aaliyah to literally bludgeon an attacker to a CGI-enabled X-Ray fatality with.

(I had forgotten how small DMX's part was in this, but it's hard to hold a grudge towards the film, when antagonist Russell Wong is clearly having the TIME OF HIS LIFE being EEEVIL. Also, there's a moment where Delroy Lindo wiggles his eyebrows on screen. Have you ever seen Delroy Lindo wiggle his eyebrows? PURE JOY)

this film is a perfect exhibit to offer for my theory that being entertaining is what makes a movie Great, rather than striving for Greatness. from Parasite to Desert Hearts to The Birds to even Almost Famous, i can think of SO many viewing experiences with Great Movies where i was still tempted to do a lil phone check at least once while watching…but my eyes are glued to the screen for every last second of Romeo Must Die.
