Young history buff Kevin can scarcely believe it when six dwarfs emerge from his closet one night. Former employees of the Supreme Being, they've purloined a map charting all of the holes in the fabric of time and are using it to steal treasures from different historical eras. Taking Kevin with them, they variously drop in on Napoleon, Robin Hood and King Agamemnon before the Supreme Being catches up with them.

Time Bandits is the third feature film from director Terry Gilliam and the first part of his "Trilogy of Imagination" (followed by Brazil and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen). It's about a young boy named Kevin who joins a group of dwarves as they travel in time to rob the richest people throughout history using a map of holes in the space-time continuum. Meanwhile, there's a mythical war being waged behind the scenes between the Supreme Being and Evil. Like Brazil and Munchausen, it explores the characters' struggles to make sense of life in a senseless world.

My Brother-in-law, my wife and I showed Time Bandits to the nephews last night. Every adult in the room was super excited for it. The kids stayed engaged.
I tried to wax philosophic about the joys of production design and art direction. Not sure that sunk in with them. I went on too long about practical and optical effects - building with fabrics and materials to create sets and monsters and models; manipulating inherent aberrations in lenses and in film to twerk spatial scale and create other illusions - and how different that kind of craft work is from the intricate modeling of CGI (an art too, but entirely different in its formal rigor and limitations).

You can see the differing perspectives that Terry Gilliam and John Cleese, the two opposite poles of Monty Python, brought to the group, and also the areas where the sensibilities overlapped, if you watch this in close enough proximity to Cleese's A Fish Called Wanda or Fawlty Towers. Gilliam is interested in mood, atmosphere, visual texture, and not concerned with narrative propulsion. This movie is a series of loosely-connected vignettes, all individually stimulating, but they don't crescendo. As with a lot of Gilliam movies, this is a garden of delights that feels a little exhausting by the two-thirds point.
