The FN P90 is a selective fire personal defense weapon (PDW) designed and manufactured by FN Herstal in Belgium. The P90's name is taken from 1990, the year it was introduced. The P90 was created in response to NATO requests for a replacement for 9×19mm Parabellum firearms; it was designed as a compact but powerful firearm for vehicle crews, operators of crew-served weapons, support personnel, special forces and counter-terrorist groups. The P90 was designed by FN in conjunction with the FN Five-seven pistol and FN 5.7×28mm ammunition. It was developed and initially marketed as a personal defense weapon, but it could also be considered a submachine gun or compact assault rifle. Featuring a compact bullpup design with an integrated reflex sight and fully ambidextrous controls, the P90 is an unconventional weapon with a futuristic appearance. Its design incorporates several innovations such as a unique top-mounted magazine and FN's small-caliber, high-velocity 5.7×28mm ammunition.

The P90 has an extremely high rate of fire, large clip size, good accuracy, and high mobility. Its steep price reflects these characteristics.

Tactics[edit]

The P90 chews up unarmored targets and is exceedingly easy to use, making this weapon shine as a 2nd or anti-eco round buy. Spraying with this weapon is very effective as the recoil is relatively easy to control. Unlike rifles, the P90's recoil also does not get much worse with movement, allowing aggressive players to run and gun in a way that they could not with, for example, an AK-47. The P90 is best utilized in close or mid-range situations, though it also has the ability to reach out and put a few bullets on target in small bursts at longer ranges.

The main drawback of the P90 is that, at $2300, it is more expensive than the Famas and Galil, its chief rivals for second round or force buy guns, and unlike other SMGs, it only rewards $300, as opposed to $600, per bounty. In addition, with limited armor penetration and diminished accuracy at long range, the P90 falls off very quickly once the other team can afford rifles of their own. This becomes problematic when, for example, a P90 user's team quickly loses on an eco round. Saving a Famas or Galil in these situations can make a huge difference in the following round, when the enemy team will have rifles and armor; a P90 is significantly less useful in this case. For this reason, more experienced players will more frequently opt for a Famas or Galil when they cannot afford an M4 or AK-47. Furthermore, SMGs like the UMP-45 and MP7 retain most of the P90's anti-eco usefulness at a much lower cost, making them an arguably better choice as a second round buy.
