B8
From Liquipedia Dota 2 Wiki
B8 Esports, commonly referred to as B8, is a Ukrainian esports organization founded by The International 2011 champion Danil "Dendi" Ishutin.[1]
History
[edit]Early beginnings
[edit]B8 was founded in January 2020 after Dendi left Natus Vincere, 8 years after he joined.[1] The initial squad consisted of pio65, Dendi, Ghostik, KingR and LeBronDota; however, the team struggled to make an impact, picking up very few series against established teams. This was followed by a long loss streak of 25 games, leading to B8 reshuffling the team, bringing in Crystallis, LastHero, 5up and Fishman. This new roster finally broke the losing streak at 26 losses, a record in professional Dota 2, with a 2-0 win over FlyToMoon 2.0 in the BEYOND EPIC: Europe/CIS Closed Qualifier;[2] however, B8 failed to qualify in the playoffs, first losing to Team Empire Hope, then promising upstarts Vikin.gg. B8 then fell back into their losing habits, struggling to secure any sort of series win, and more often than not, struggling to take games at all within a series. By the end of the year, B8 had parted ways with all of the members of the team, except Dendi.
The South American experiment
[edit]In January 2021, B8 announced a new experiment: Importing South American players into the region. Brazilians RdO, SexyFat and Duster joined the team, with fellow Brazilian coach Astini and MeTTpuM joined as coaches.[3] [T]SA joined the team later that month, completing the roster.[4] The roster's first tournament was the ESL One CIS Online Season 1: Decider Tournament where the top four would play in the Upper Division, and the bottom four in the Lower Division of the restarted Dota Pro Circuit (DPC). The team got off to a promising start, first beating Gambit Esports 2-0 but losing to NoTechies and then EXTREMUM in the playoffs, sending them to the Lower Division. B8's struggles continued here, beating XactJlepbI but losing to every other team, finishing last and resulting in relegation. A 5th-6th placed finish at Snow Sweet Snow #2 proved to be the roster's high point, and the South American experiment was stopped in March 2021.
DPC struggles
[edit]In March 2021, the three Brazilians were replaced by the DkFogas, NoFear and promising young talent watson,[5] and B8 was merged with XactJlepbI (whose slot was owned by NoFear), who finished 6th in the Lower Division, allowing B8 to play there without needing to qualify.[6] The new roster successfully avoided relegation in the second season. B8's season ended with a disappointing second-round loss in The International 2021 Eastern Europe qualifiers to Team Unique. Slot owner NoFear then removed the B8 players from the roster, but the team signed Gatciy to take part in Dota 2 Champions League Season 4. Here, B8 secured a mid-table 5th-6th finish, an improvement on performances, but far from what B8 envisioned.
Although B8 had disappointed, several of their players individually had not — but this meant that the struggling B8 could not hold onto these players. Ahead of the next DPC season, watson, Limitless and NoFear left to join HellRaisers, and [T]SA left to join Team Empire. B8 first signed v1olent, then used Dota 2 Champions League 5 to try out multiple players in the 3 and 4 positions (unfortunately losing all their group stage series in the process), eventually settling on two further relatively-unknown players in pJon and LagooNa. This squad, however, struggled like none before in the DPC, winning only a single game (against V-Gaming), forcing relegation once again, and amassing yet another unwanted losing streak. This was finally broken in 21 matches against IVY in Dota 2 Champions League Season 7.[7] This reprieve was short-lived, as B8 ended the tournament with two further series losses, then withdrew from the following season.
Relocating to Mexico
[edit]For the next DPC season, B8 made a brave, unusual decision: They would acquire Wildcard Gaming's DPC slot in North America, and play from Mexico.[8] With the prospect of Division I Dota 2, B8 were able to acquire StoneBank, Funn1k, MoOz and Lodine — a much stronger set of players. B8's struggles initially persisted, however, with many wondering if a new loss streak would be achieved; however, B8 persisted and closed out their final two series against Thiuth Gaming and ALPHA in clean fashion, to preserve their Division I status. The second season (rebranded as a Tour), B8 replaced MoOz with CTOMAHEH1, and improved to a mid-table finish.
Ahead of the third Tour, a curfew was imposed in Ukraine, as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war. This prevented B8's players from leaving for Mexico. PGL granted them a controversial exemption, allowing them to play in the North America DPC from Ukraine.[9] B8 struggled in the third Tour, losing most of their series, forcing a three-way tiebreak with ALPHA and Sand King Gómez, with two spots up for relegation. This exhausting tiebreaker lasted 3 rounds and 12 hours, but B8 finally prevailed with Dendi on his signature Pudge.[10]
In the The International 2023 North America Qualifiers, as both Shopify Rebellion and TSM had qualified for The International 2023 directly on DPC points, B8's chances of qualifying looked viable, with nouns being the only team with any sort of international experience. B8 revamped its roster, replacing Funn1k for V-Tune (angering him[11]) and Lodine for Kidaro. Despite being sent to the Lower Bracket by Wildcard Gaming, B8 stormed the Lower Bracket and beat Wildcard Gaming in revenge. In the Lower Bracket Final, B8 dispatched DogChamp fairly comfortably, more comfortably than nouns had in the Upper Bracket Final. In the Grand Final, however, nouns proved to be too strong, taking a convincing 2-0 lead. Facing elimination, Dendi picked an unorthodox mid Witch Doctor alongside V-Tune's Faceless Void. This combination proved to be devastating, forcing a tense 56 minute match, but unfortunately for B8, nouns' superior execution won out in the end.
Post-DPC era
[edit]After The International 2023, Valve announced the end of the Dota Pro Circuit.[12] B8 secured arguably their best finish with a 3rd-4th finish in Pinnacle Cup: Malta Vibes #4 (losing to Team Tickles), and finally tasted their first tournament win in European Pro League Season 14, getting their revenge on Team Tickles in the Grand Final with an exhausting 3-2 victory. However, B8 were unable to qualify for any of the major tournaments such as ESL One Kuala Lumpur, playing from the stacked Western European region.
