Biography[edit]
2021: Tournament prodigy[edit]
The beginning of 2021 would mark his first recorded tournament appearance in nik's Winter Cup 2021. There, he was able to qualify in a Round of 32 bracket which featured many of the most prominent players of that time period. Even though he had an early exit, losing both of his matches, he was able to take Skydiver and xootynator, much more well established players at the time, all the way to tiebreaker. This showed very early on in his career that, even as a complete newbie to tournaments, he had the skill necessary to hang with the best players and possessed plenty of potential.
maliszewski would go on to participate in a multitude of tournaments over the course of 2021, such as 3WC and The Perennial, to varying degrees of success. He once again managed to qualify for a major 1v1 tournament in Corsace Closed 2021, where he displayed tremendous improvement just a few months after his tourney scene debut by being able to score upset wins against players like Arnold24x24 and Bartek22830, and also secure a 7th-8th place finish after a 6-5 win in the losers bracket against BTMC. His first tournament wins came a couple of months later, with the auction draft tournament osu! Mercenary Shop 3, and the polish national tourney osu! Polish Masters.
However, the event which truly put eyes on him as a player was Corsace Open 2021, one of biggest and most competitive open rank team tournaments of that year. His carry performance for El Dupa would help the team score a podium finish and 3rd place badge after a run through the winners bracket all the way to the Winners Final , while also earning maliszewski 3rd place in the MVP rankings of that tournament, only behind mrekk and badeu[2].
Unsurprisingly, all of this earned him a spot at the osu! World Cup in Team Poland, who at the time were looking to refresh their team with new talent after a series of underwhelming finishes and who were quick to entrust maliszewski with the role of team captain. While Poland finished with a respectable, but not out of the ordinary top 12 placing, maliszewski stood out with his consistent and impactful performances. In the qualifiers he would achieve a score average of over 900k while playing 20/20 maps[3], and also managed to top the performance scores rankings of the Quarter Finals stage[4]. This tournament only further solidified his status as one of osu!'s up and coming talents.
2022: Rise to dominance[edit]
A year later, returning to the tournament where his tourney career started, at Nik's Winter Cup 2022 maliszewski had his eyes on the prize. He would qualify for the tournament as the #1 seeded player, which set him up very early on as the tournament favourite. While he did suffer a setback in the form of an upset tiebreaker loss at the hands of Akolibed, maliszewski was able to rebound through the losers bracket and make it to the Grand Final where he would once again face Akolibed. After initially resetting the bracket with a 7-3 win in the first set, he managed to score a 7-0 clean sweep in the second set, winning the tourney in dominant fashion which would set the tone for the next few tournaments.
Going into spring, maliszewski would breeze through multiple tourneys. He claimed victory in osu! Battle Royale 5[5] after making it to the final lobby of the tournament, where he top scored 9/13 maps and outlasted players like Karcher, Zylice and Reedkatt. At Pandemonium Intercontinental Showdown 2022[6] he would go on to have an equally impressive showing, winning the EU bracket to make it into the Super Grand Finals weekend, where he bested Karcher in the semi-final, and Utami in the Grand Final, all of this without losing more than 3 maps in any given match. While at Aim Cup[7], a 2v2 relax mode tournament, he teamed up with badeu, where the two of them won the tournament with a record of 34-0 (Quarter Finals points not counted as that was a forfeit win).
Looking to continue his momentum, maliszewski took part in Corsace Closed 2022, which he was invited to alongside 15 other world class tournament players. However the fierce competition would prove to be just a little too much this time around, falling to Arnold24x24 in the winners bracket, and being eliminated two weeks later by the player who would go on to win the tournament in Utami.
At The Perennial 2022 he competed as a part of Microwaved Lobster, a team captained by future OWC teammate Bartek22830 and created with clear intent to win the tournament. maliszewski was an indispensable carry player throughout the tournament, achieving the 2nd highest global match cost in Qualifiers[8] and topping the performance rankings of the Quarter Finals[9] and Finals[10] weekends. In the Grand Final, Microwaved Lobster was up against Very Cool, a team led by multiple OWC winner fieryrage, and which included incredibly strong players like mrekk, WhiteCat and tournament legend Bubbleman. While Very Cool handed malisz's team their only game loss of the tournament, 3-7 in the first set of the Grand Final, Microwaved Lobster made use of their winners bracket advantage and were able to come out victorious in the bracket reset with a mirrored scoreline of 7-3, which secured maliszewski's biggest open rank team tournament win yet. maliszewski had the highest match cost in both sets of the Grand Finals[Citation needed] and was able to achieve 3 full combos on a mappool bordering 8* average star rating.
The month of July came with the most anticipated 1v1 tournament of the year, Charlie's Perfect Math Class, the sequel to DrenchedProgram and its record sized $10,000 prize pool. With previous winner Vaxei being absent, maliszewski, mrekk and Utami would shape up to be the likeliest candidates for winning the tournament after qualifiers[11]. maliszewski narrowly avoided a loss versus badeu in the Group Stage, coming back from 2-4 to win 5-4, which helped him advance from his group in 1st place to start the knockout stage from the upper bracket. There, he was able to get decisive wins against Intercambing and mrekk, and closed out the match against Utami 5-3 after winning the last 2 maps by only just over 40k each. In the Grand Final, he had to face the arguably least expected opponent: Chicony, the #26 seeded player from qualifiers, who had left a trail of higher rated players in the losers bracket. However, maliszewski stopped the Cinderella story dead in its tracks, winning in a relatively comfortable 5-1, and securing himself a payday of $4,500.
Coming out of CPMC, maliszewski could shift his attention to Yaz's Summer Cup 2022[12], the next tourney on the list of Circle Circuit tournaments, of which he had so far won 3/3 (Nik's, Perennial and CPMC). The tournament had already been ongoing for little over a month, and maliszewski found himself in the losers bracket after an unexpected loss against Reedkatt. After a few solid wins it felt as if he had found his groove again, however with one match away from top 3 he would once again have to face Reedkatt. In a close back and forth match with maps decided by razor thin score margins in his favour, Reedkatt would ultimately secure the win 7-6.
Later into the year he managed to pick up wins in Conyoh Cup 3, Aetherian's Summer Singles 2 and Finnish Duo Cup 2022, however the next big stop in terms of major tourneys would be Corsace Open 2022, where just like at the Perennial, he was selected in a team assembled by Bartek22830 for winning the tourney. Whispering Almond, carrying the name and some of the players of Corsace Open's 2021 winning team, like badeu and im a fancy lad, advanced through the bracket with relative ease and without dropping a single map on their way to winners finals. To win Corsace, maliszewski's team had to face a squad with some familiar faces: goofy ahh lil jits, another team captained by fieryrage and which included mrekk and WhiteCat, but also rising stars like criller and enri. The two teams had a series of three very competitive games through winners and grands, but one which ultimately ended in goofy ahh's favor after they were able to close out a 7-6 tiebreaker win in the Grand Finals bracket reset, leaving Whispering Almond's players with only the consolation prize of a 2nd place badge.
maliszewski's strong finishes in Circle Circuit tournaments helped him acquire the points necessary to secure a spot at the Circle Circuit Championship[13] together with 7 other players which ranked highly in CC tourneys over the year. Qualifying with the highest amount of points out of all players, he would the advance from Round Robin stage undefeated, then clean sweep Reedkatt 7-0 as a payback win for the losses he suffered during Yaz's, and afterwards convincingly took down Utami 7-3, the same score that maliszewski lost to him in Corsace Closed, to win CCC and to achieve a triumphant success in the face of a stacked field of players.
With osu! World Cup 2022 coming up, Team Poland continued its process of rebuilding with maliszewski at the helm , bringing in even more new talent, and for the first time ever not having WubWoofWolf on the roster. Poland would come out swinging out of the qualifiers as the #2 seed, with maliszewski dominating the qualifiers stats, where he had the highest performance score, the top overall scores in 6/11 maps, and achieved a total of 4 SS ranks[14]. While Poland managed to have a relatively smooth early bracket stage, in Winners Semis they would face the 2nd place finishing team of the previous two editions in Germany, an opponent which Poland was not able to overcome even with maliszewski FC-ing 8/9 maps. Even though the 3-6 Germany loss cast doubts as to Poland's roster depth in late stages, a decisive 7-2 victory against Canada put those doubts to rest. With an OWC podium badge on the line, Poland and maliszewski had to play against the defending and 4x consecutive OWC winners the United States, who was reeling from their winners bracket loss against South Korea. Although things started out great for Poland with a 3-1 lead in their favour, USA went on to score 6 consecutive points to win 7-3, and ended Poland's run at 4th place. OWC 2022 marked Poland's highest finish since their OWC 2017 win, and also a career defining performance for maliszewski who was able to top the performance score rankings of the Round of 16[15], Quarter Finals [16] and Semi Finals[17] stages, while having the 2nd highest performance in Round of 32[18] and Finals[19]. Over the course of the tournament he had 100% lobby participation rate with 46/46 maps played, out of which he top scored 30[20].
In 2022, maliszewski increased his tourney badge count more than fivefold, starting the year with 3 and ending it with 17. He also managed to gain the highest amount of prize money an osu! player has earned in a single year at $6,761.27[21]. For his accomplishments in 2022, maliszewski was voted as the 2nd best osu! player of the year in Clicker's Choice Award: 2022, and while not the only tournament player present on the Top 20 list, it was an acknowledgement of how highly he was regarded by the community, in no small part due to his historical tournament achievements over the course of just a single year, to the point of being placed only behind mrekk, the #1 rank global which broke countless records and milestones in singleplayer.
2023: Struggle for the top[edit]
Entering 2023 after such a successful year, maliszewski made a compelling case in the eyes of many for being one of, if not the best tournament player in the world, with his multiple and very solid tournament victories early into the year solidifying his status. Just like in 2022, he would dominate Pandemonium Intercontinental Showdown 2023[22] with authority, not allowing most of his opponents to gain more than one point against him, with only Amamya Kokoro being able to score two. He also won team tourneys like Frost Blossom Cup, Wonderland Cup, the Score V1 tournament Hippo Cup 6 and the accuracy scoring based tourney Kay's Finesse Cup.
But while not in short supply of success, maliszewski was still looking to complete his trophy cabinet with the major achievements he had yet to attain, one of which was the prestigious Corsace Closed. Although the mission would not be any easier than the previous years, maliszewski's track record in previous 1v1 tourneys had him as a more than likely candidate to win the tournament, a position which was strengthened by him achieving the #1 seed in the bracket seeding qualifiers, with a score average just under 600k, on an incredibly difficult mappool. maliszewski achieved convincing wins against Mastasz and xootynator, while being able to close out the semi-final match 6-3 despite Tsuwagi's best efforts, which confirmed a highly anticipated matchup between him and mrekk in the Winners Final. The two of them would trade points, with mrekk having the advantage on mechanically oriented maps, and maliszewski making use of the unconventional tournament specific skillsets, a dynamic which in this case was to maliszewski's benefit. The match shifted gradually as mrekk ran out of aim and tapping maps, and ended on a 7-4 final score line which ensured maliszewski's spot in Grand Finals. The rematch would prove to be not as fruitful, as the skillcap requirements of a mappool close to an average star rating of 9* would balance things out to mrekk's advantage, with maliszewski suffering a double 3-7 loss in the two games of the Grand Final, prolonging his quest for Corsace glory.
While the Corsace Closed defeat left a bitter taste, just a week later an opportunity would arise to wash it off: The Battle of Unstoppable Tournament Gods[23] showmatch which had been announced a month prior between him and Vaxei, the legendary player who won 3 OWC's, many of osu!'s largest 1v1 tourneys, and who previously dominated the tournament scene before maliszewski rose to prominence. Although Vaxei, who had only recently returned as an active player, put up a fight perhaps more intense than expected by many, maliszewski was still able to come out on top, closing out the match 7-5 and becoming the first player to hand Vaxei a 1v1 loss since WubWoofWolf in the winners bracket of Game_Osu 3[24] all the way back in 2019.
After securing an invitation through The Roundtable II: Qualifier earlier that year, in July maliszewski would fly to Los Angeles to attend The Roundtable II LAN event organized by BTMC. While the event offered an occasion to socialize with fellow players and was overall surrounded by a friendly atmosphere, it still presented a major competitive opportunity, featuring two tourneys with large prize pools, top tourney players from around the world in attendance, and amongst all, an opportunity to settle the score with mrekk after Corsace Closed, who wanted to win the Main Event after finishing 2nd in 2022[25]. In the first day of competition, maliszewski narrowly missed out on advancing to the final lobby of the Battle Royal styled tourney, after losing the last map of lobby A against Rektygon who would go on to win it all after a surging day one at the event. The second day featured a more characteristic maliszewski performance, who shook off some of the jet lag and won the first two matches of the Main Event without losing any maps. In the final day of the event, maliszewski advanced to the Winners Final after beating Bubbleman to face an mrekk who had a similarly smooth path so far. Unfortunately for him the match started out with 2 break points and a 4-0 lead from mrekk which proved to be decisive in the match's outcome, and in consequence maliszewski suffered yet another 3-7 loss to mrekk. Managing to defeat xootynator in the Losers Final, maliszewski hoped to turn the odds in the Grand Final despite the losers bracket disadvantage and mrekk being in seemingly prime form, a possibility which looked more than likely as he was able to take control of the match after an impressive FC on DT2 and pushed the score of the first set to 6-2, needing only one point to force a decisive set. However, a water break requested by mrekk shifted the momentum away from him, with the match ending up going to a tiebreaker where maliszewski made the questionable choice of using Hidden and where mrekk was able to come out on top to win 7-6.
Although following recent losses the "best tournament player" narrative surrounding him had somewhat subsided, this didn't really stop maliszewski from still being incredibly successful in the latter half of the year, as between the end of The Roundtable and until the start of the osu! World Cup, he won 14 badged tournaments.
During the aforementioned time period, maliszewski was finally able to win his first Corsace tournament at Corsace Open 2023[26] as a part of FLOPINSKI, who crushed its competition during the tournament and finished with a map record of 22-2, with maliszewski top scoring 16/24 maps including all of the 8 maps played in the Grand Final.
The succesful period would culminate with mrekk Grandmaster Cup. After achieving the #1 seed by a relatively wide margin, he would defeat players like enri and Vaxei on his way to the Grand Final, while in the rematch against Vaxei in Grand Finals, maliszewski showcased an unprecedented display of dominance by winning 7-1 and definitively putting an end to Vaxei's 5 year long tournament winning streak. The highlight of the match was his 2,500 combo play[27] on the NM2 map of the song Icyxis ~True Ending~ by Raimukun[28], which peaked at 1050pp.
Team Poland, once again captained by maliszewski, came into the osu! World Cup 2023 with most of its 2022 roster intact and lots high of hopes, riding both off of the optimism from the previous year's solid finish and the good form of players like gnahus and rafal. Many people expected this iteration of the team to be the one to end Poland's 6 year long Top 3 drought, some even going as far as considering them a potential dark horse for winning the tournament. Early on the expectations seemed to be validated as in Qualifiers Poland had the highest score average out of all teams, helped by maliszewski having the best individual OWC qualifiers performance[29] for the second year in a row, but narrowly missed out on the #1 seed to South Korea by just a few max percentage points.
