About S-Tier, A-Tier, B-Tier, C-Tier[edit]
S-Tier, A-Tier, B-Tier and C-Tier include the tiers of most tournaments covered on this wiki. They are categorized as follows:
Name | Description |
---|---|
S-Tier | Former Premier. Tournaments with only the world's elite teams. Finals of S-Tier tournaments are international LAN-events. They require an extensive qualifier system to make sure only the top teams can take part, such as Splatoon World Championshipand other major sanctioned series such as the Nippon Pro Baseball series |
A-Tier | Former Major. Tournaments with top competition, however a less strict qualifying system than S-Tier, for example by open qualifiers. A-Tier tournaments can, but do not have to, include a LAN-step, but require substantial regional impact in a region, such as Top 8 teams within the major regions of the game. Such as Koshien Series, GENESIS and Top divisions of Ligue ebTV and LUTI Series. |
B-Tier | Tournaments with mostly top competition similar to A-Tier but contains have at least regional impact or small tournaments with unusual prize pool. Tournaments with relatively small prize pools and less overall importance can be B-Tier if competitors are expected to be majority in the top level. Such as the European Nationals and Inkopolis Showdown |
C-Tier | Former Minor. Tournaments which focus on a region’s or country's bubble scene and small prize pools. |
D-Tier | Tournaments with small prize pools and low importance overall, typically with low level bubble teams or teams outside the scope of regular coverage. |
While the prize pool is an important factor for categorizing tournaments, it does not equal a specific tier. Higher tier tournaments require a higher level of competition, which, if not met, can cause a tournament to be tiered lower. For example, a hypothetical $75k tournament with mostly all being one-off stacks or no top teams participating is not A-, but B-Tier at most.
