Another edition of the classic 2D platformer
Lode Runner Legacy is a full-version action game developed and published by Tozai Games. It’s a variant of Lode Runner, the classic 2D platformer created by Doug Smith. As with the original game, this iteration lets you take control of the Runner, who must collect gold pieces in each level while avoiding enemies. You can find similar gameplay elements in another classic, Space Panic.
While retaining the original gameplay, Lode Runner Legacy adds new features, offering a fresh experience to hardcore fans and new generations of players. It includes diverse game modes, enhanced voxel graphics, and powerful level editors.
A golden upgrade
Since its release in 1983, Lode Runner has spawned a series of remakes and spin-offs, including Sierra’s Lode Runner: The Legend Returns. Add to that growing list Lode Runner Legacy from Tonzai Games, which holds the original game’s copyrights and trademark rights. In this iteration, you can expect the same ingenious balance of puzzle and action gameplay that made the original a hit in the 80s.
You still take control of the titular Runner, who must recover stolen gold pieces from the evil empire while avoiding guards and minefields. The multi-story brick platforms on each level remain along with the ladders and suspended hand-to-hand bars. This time, however, you can enjoy the puzzle-platformer in various game modes, depending on your playstyle or even mood. Nonetheless, there’s one noticeable omission, and that is the bombs.
The game includes an adventure mode with a specific mission, a puzzle mode without AI enemies chasing, and an extra mode that offers more levels and new enemies. In addition, you can play the original 150 levels in the classic mode and with two players in the local co-op mode. Also, this version rocks the retro style in voxel graphics and features level editors that allow extensive customization.
Cemented legacy
All in all, Lode Runner Legacy bridges the gap between nostalgia and modern gameplay, providing a robust and engaging experience that maintains the essence of the original for generations of players to appreciate. The game retains the core elements that made the original a classic while incorporating new features and modes that enhance replayability and customization. You can consider it the definitive edition, at least for modern platforms.
