Poptimism failed, not because of its commitment to social justice – which was a good thing – but because it had no material analysis. It cast pop stars as underdogs, outsiders, underestimated and dismissed by the Rockist Establishment, without pausing to recognize that they were vastly more powerful than any critic ever would be. […] It’s all the times when the music cracks open and something shining and huge and true falls out, some feeling too powerful for words alone. In those moments, music does what it was made for — it lets us put our own weird, unique, messy, unprecedented human hearts into each other’s hands, and proves that our oppressors, for all their power, cannot shut us up or limit who we are.

Poptimism (also called popism), a portmanteau of pop and optimism, is a mode of discourse which holds that pop music deserves the same respect as rock music and is as authentic and as worthy of professional critique and interest.

In which some very meta background music comes out of the background, and goes nuts.

You know how saying a word over and over again makes it lose all meaning? Somehow, this guy invoked the same feeling using music. This idea does make for surprisingly interesting film score, tho. Would be perfect for a psychological thriller.

These platforms do not exist as a place for art to live and flourish. They exist as a place to flatten art into commodity. There is no context here. Instead there are small armies of lawyers trying to make sure a rich person doesn’t get fined for letting a 13-year old medieval music nerd see the Latin prepositional word for “with”.

Very pretty video with classic British sarcasm, albeit the thesis is quite obvious. He already admits to this in a footnote, but I think where innovation is most needed in notation is with computer music. My focus personally is on digital composition, sampling, and capturing more arbitrary articulations (i.e. parameter sweeps, toggling of effects, MPE).
