I scolded @smorkin for sending markdown emails but it turned out that it was Delta Chat that was converting his HTML-only emails to markdown (kinda uglily but that’s on me, I need to send a patch if I’m not happy, main point is that the behavior was on the receiver end).

So the scolding shifted to be about sending HTML-only emails in the first place 👩🏻‍🏫

Is there a fork on the horizon?

I tried a bunch of different clients during the years. I went through Sparrow before it was bought and killed by Google, I tried AirMail, Polymail, Unibox and Spark. To be honest with you, I wasn’t happy with any of those clients. Don’t get me wrong, they were ok and did the job but I’m a weird person and I like simplicity. Sometimes I want a tool that does one thing and nothing more. Smart inbox is nice, filters are great but I don’t want to use them. I want to get my emails, read them, reply to them and archive them. And that’s it.

I finally cooked up a workflow so I can handle huge threads in the Emacs frontend for Notmuch seamlessly:

chasquid is an SMTP (email) server with a focus on simplicity, security, and ease of operation.

It sends and receives email as a typical MTA (for example, can be used instead of Postfix or Exim), and it is designed mainly for individuals and small groups.

It’s written in Go, and distributed under the Apache license 2.0.

Patchwork might be something to keep in mind as an opportunity to install later on if I get overwhelmed by patches. Right now it’d be a complete YAGNI. Also it’s Django.

I like the idea: it doesn’t intrude with the mailing list workflow at all, it’s just an extra “view” of the patches.

My problem with this widely quoted and self-contradictory essay is that they have driven a lot of otherwise very smart people to give up on making email the best it can be.

And there are plenty of things where email is still the best thing around. It’s a miracle that a world-writable fully federated inbox system is as good as it is. Fedi is a spam pit, IRC a harassment nightmare, email is at the forefront of fighting those things. Of course we want encryption on that.
