Starred Articles: Samsung’s Frame TV is finally getting the knockoffs it deserves by The Verge - All Posts August 07, 2024 at 08:16AM

Image: TCL

It’s been several years since Samsung first launched its popular Frame TV lineup, and now we’re starting to see more brands release their own canvas-like designs. The latest is TCL’s newly announced 4K QLED NXTFrame TV, which has many of the features you’d expect from an “Art TV” — including a magnetic wooden frame, flush-to-wall mount, an “ultra matte” display, and various gallery modes for displaying images.

This follows similar releases like the Hisense CanvasTV and LG’s Posé and Easel TVs that mirror Samsung’s Frame pitch — to disguise the TV itself as a piece of artwork around your home. Third-party accessories like the Leon Studio Frame for Sony’s Bravia range have also appeared to get in on the aesthetic trend, but all-in-one…

Starred Articles: Sonos brings TV Audio Swap to its more affordable soundbars — and Android by The Verge - All Posts August 06, 2024 at 11:56AM

Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge

The Sonos Ace headphones launched with a very convenient trick called TV Audio Swap, which lets you send audio that would normally come out of the Sonos Arc soundbar to the headphones instead. Two months later, the company is enabling TV Audio Swap on its more affordable soundbars — and it’s no longer limited to customers with Apple devices.

The feature now works on both generations of the Sonos Beam as well as the entry-level Sonos Ray. Until now, an iPhone or iPad was required to activate TV Audio Swap, but now Android devices can do so as well. The feature itself uses a direct Wi-Fi connection to send audio from the soundbar to the headphones, but you’ll need the app for setup and to toggle certain settings.

Starred Articles: Net neutrality is on ice by The Verge - All Posts August 01, 2024 at 06:30PM

Net neutrality is officially on hold after the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals blocked the rule from taking effect.

The court granted a stay, extending an earlier temporary pause. This time, net neutrality will be blocked until the court says otherwise after reviewing the petitions from broadband providers who opposed the rule. Those internet service providers (ISPs) successfully showed they would likely succeed on the merits of their challenge, the panel of judges wrote.

“The American public wants an internet that is fast, open, and fair,” Federal Communications Commission Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement on the stay. “Today’s decision by the Sixth Circuit is a setback but we will not give up the fight for net neutrality.”

Starred Articles: Meta moves on from its celebrity lookalike AI chatbots by The Verge - All Posts July 30, 2024 at 06:46PM

Image: Meta

Meta has shut down its AI chatbots that let you have conversations with alter-ego versions of celebrities, as reported by The Information. The celebrity chatbots were a big part of Meta’s announcements at its Connect event last September, now, you can’t talk with them anymore.

A post shared by Tom Brady (@tombrady)

The shutdown follows Meta’s Monday rollout of AI Studio, a tool that lets creators in the US make AI chatbots of themselves. Based on a statement, the company seems to be favoring this direction rather than the more handcrafted celebrity bots.

“You can no longer interact with AI characters embodied by celebrities,” Meta spokesperson Liz Sweeney says to The Verge….

Perplexity’s “Publishers’ Program” has recruited its first batch of partners, including prominent names like Time, Der Spiegel, Fortune, Entrepreneur, The Texas Tribune, and Automattic (with WordPress.com participating but not Tumblr). Starred Articles: Meta’s Quest 3 ‘Layout’ app lets you take measurements in mixed reality by The Verge - All Posts July 30, 2024 at 09:34AM

Image: Meta

Meta is launching an app for its Quest 3 headsets that lets you take measurements and visualize changes in your home. The utility app, called Layout, will appear in the Quest 3 library as part of the v68 update.

Meta says you can use Layout to measure furniture around your home, allowing you to get a sense of how much room you have for a new couch or TV without taking out your tape measure. You can also use the app to place virtual objects in a real-world environment as well as try out the leveling tool to ensure the picture you just hung up isn’t crooked.

You can place and resize virtual objects — like a TV — to see how they look.

Along with the Layout app, the v68 update includes Meta’s e…

Starred Articles: Your new AI Friend is almost ready to meet you by The Verge - All Posts July 30, 2024 at 11:00AM

It’s the new-age Tamagotchi, only it talks back. | Image: Friend

A few minutes before Avi Schiffmann and I get on Google Meet to talk about the new product he’s building, an AI companion called “Friend,” he sends me a screenshot of a message he just received. It’s from “Emily,” and it wishes him luck with our chat. “Good luck with the interview,” Emily writes, “I know you’ll do great. I’m here if you need me after.”

Emily is not human. It’s the AI companion Schiffmann has been building, and it lives in a pendant hung around his neck. The product was initially named Tab before Schiffmann pivoted to calling it Friend, and he’s been working on the idea for the last couple of years.

Schiffmann defines Friend both by what it is and what it very deliberately is not. The original idea was to be more…

Starred Articles: Apple’s iOS 18.1 developer beta adds AI call recording and transcription by The Verge - All Posts July 29, 2024 at 04:22PM

Image: Apple

Apple’s iOS 18.1 developer preview comes with an AI-powered feature that lets you record and transcribe phone calls, as reported by MacRumors. Users with access to the beta can tap the new “record” button in the top-left corner of the call screen to keep an audio log of their call.

Once enabled, all callers will hear a message saying, “This call will be recorded.” The Phone app will then record the call, while automatically creating a transcription that will appear in the Notes app. In addition, users will also be able to access the full audio recording and an AI-generated summary of the call in the Notes app.

Apple first showed off phone call recording during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The feature seems useful for…

Starred Articles: Instagram starts letting people create AI versions of themselves by The Verge - All Posts July 29, 2024 at 09:14PM

AI characters in Instagram. | Meta

Meta is opening up the ability for anyone in the US to create AI versions of themselves in Instagram or on the web, with a new tool called AI Studio.

The pitch is that creators and business owners will use these AI profiles to talk to their followers on their behalf. They’ll be able to talk directly with humans in chat threads and respond to comments on their author’s account. Meta says Instagram users in the US can get started with AI Studio via either its website or by starting a new “AI chat” directly in Instagram.

In a blog post on Monday, the company writes that “creators can customize their AI based on things like their Instagram content, topics to avoid and links they want it to share.” The post goes on to say that creators will…

Starred Articles: In search of the perfect movie recommendation by The Verge - All Posts July 28, 2024 at 10:00AM

Image: Samar Haddad for The Verge

It’s one of the most common low-stakes annoyances in modern life: you flop down on the couch at the end of the day, finally with a few minutes to watch one of the dozens of incredible shows or movies you have access to thanks to the peak TV era and the advent of streaming, and you start scrolling. Instead of actually watching anything, you spend an interminable evening opening apps, aimlessly scrolling through endless rows of same-looking tiles. You eventually give up and watch The Office again.

On this episode of The Vergecast, we look at why TV and movie recommendations are so complicated, and whether AI might be able to make them better. If Spotify can build infinite playlists of music you’ll like, and YouTube and TikTok always seem…
