Maybe she overpowers him before the whole Chrysallis Debacle can even happen, maybe they don’t kill him & he sticks around bc he’s enamored with her, whatever you want, or don’t even bother explaining how or why it’s happening, as long as she straps him so good he’s cries about it. Maybe even pops his glyph.
