The Hierarchy of Controls (HoC) is a workplace safety concept aimed at reducing hazards:
- Elimination - make sure the hazard no longer exists.
- Substitution - change out a material or process to reduce the hazard.
- Administrative controls - change the way work is done or give workers more information by providing them with relevant procedures, training, or warnings.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) - clothing and devices to protect workers.
Additional notes
- Some of the principles can be adapted to software engineering.
- Controls are meant to be combined.
- Software is fundamentally good at engineering controls.
- Controls can be the source of hazards.
