For the PlayStation, here’s an ambitious fix of some issues with FFIX’s fighting system.
Here’s a remix of FFVI that’s supposedly okay to start with even if I haven’t played FFVI before. Fixes some bugs and makes the game more thinky, supposedly.
I’m playing the DS remake of Final Fantasy IV right now (belatedly after getting a big spoiler from the Magic card for Cecil) and it made me curious to check out if the SNES versions had any fun romhacks and yes!
This turns FFIV into an open world game. But I’d better finish the story normally first.

Romhack to play as Bubbles in DK King of Swing.
You can normally unlock her by beating the game twice but with this hack, apply the patch then press L+Up+B+A at the title screen, enter 00011000, then go back and start the game and after the tutorial (as DK), press select at the level select screen and there she is. A life saving romhack because being able to play as Bubbles was why I was interested in this game in the first place.

Okay, there are no hacks that give visual feedback on the rhythm game part of Mother 3.
I really do love rhythm games even difficult ones but only if “too soon” and “too late” are distinct failstates. That’s the dividing line between divine and demonic for me when it comes to rhythm games. That kind of feedback makes the player better at rhythm, the games that don’t have it just reward those who are already good at it and punish everyone else. Super Mario Bros wouldn’t be very great if, when you missed a jump you couldn’t see whether you jumped too far or too short. That could be a fun challenge hack for people already good at it (like taping over the bottom part of your screen so you don’t see the pit locations) but I’m really glad it’s not the default for everyone.

I’ve been playing the non-deluxe version of Super Mario Unlimited.
It’s one of my fave NES games (my very faves are Clu Clu Land, Dracula’s Curse, and DuckTales. Tetris and Dr Mario would be up there but they have versions on other platforms that I prefer) and I’ve made it to level 4-5 currently, but now I’m thinking of starting over with the deluxe version.

Someone overhauled the Final Fantasy VI rom completely while keeping it for the SNES.
I love it when fandom treats the cultural world like one big wiki waiting to get tended to and loved and cared for.

I finally got to try Electroplankton but there were some weird meta-sfx that got in the way of the actual plankton sounds.
Some anonymous kind soul thankfully made a patch to remove most of that stuff.
