We are a research group in the Institute for Machine Learning within the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich. We are also part of the ETH AI center, the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems, the Ellis Society and the ETH Zurich - EPFL Joint Doctoral Program in the Learning Sciences.

Our research is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together two fields: Natural Language Processing (NLP) and AI for Education (AIED). We pursue a two-pronged approach, coupling a thrust on foundations of reasoning and problem-solving in Large Language Models (LLMs) along with their pedagogical applications (e.g., intelligent tutoring). Some of our current focus areas include:

  1. Science of Problem-solving (Reasoning) in language models
  2. Formal models of pedagogical theory, and applications to LLM theory and practice
  3. Pedagogical alignment of large language models
  4. Intelligent tutoring and Student modeling

We are located in the beautiful city of Zurich in Switzerland. We are grateful for funding from SNF, ETH Research Grants, Haslerstiftung, Schmidt Sciences, the ETH AI center and the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems.
