In Western culture, people say that they see the “man in the moon”; whereas in Eastern culture, people view a rabbit on the moon that has evolved from an assortment of regional folk legends.
An example of the Moon Rabbit is the Jade Rabbit, from Chinese folklore, which is often portrayed as the companion to the moon goddess Chang’e. The Jade Rabbit lives on the moon, where he is constantly pounding the elixir of life for Chang’e. In Japanese or Korean versions of this story, he is standing upon his tiptoes pounding out mochi or rice cake on an usu, a Japanese mortar.
There are many examples of the Moon Rabbit legend found in art and Eastern culture that has found its way into everyday objects around the world throughout time. Look up into the evening sky the next time the moon is full, and if you look carefully, you too may see the outline of a rabbit in the moon.
