Ebony Obsidian
- Actress
Ebony Obsidian is best known for her roles in The Six Triple Eight, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Sistas and Hunters.
Ebony was born in the Shawangunk region of New York to an East African mother with a double major in special education and psychology who went on to become a teacher and a Bronx born West Indies father with a background in music. Though always drawn to the art of storytelling, a free local acting class properly introduced her to the art of performance through a theater production.
By her preteens, she was a lead singer in her schools band, performing at talent shows, and attending both singing and acting auditions. Eager to take the next step, Ebony doubled down in high school, stacking credits, including advanced courses in English and Writing, in order to graduate early. Once complete, she was briefly enrolled in college with a focus in journalism while also maintaining odd end jobs to save for a move to New York City where she would go on to study at the William Esper Studio in Manhattan.
After a few years working on independent film and series, she landed the role of Michelle in the 'Thanksgiving' episode of Master of None alongside Angela Bassett, Lena Waithe, and Aziz Ansari. The episode went on to win the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series Primetime Emmy Award in 2017.
If Beale Street Could Talk marked Ebony's first major motion picture as well as the first novel by James Baldwin to be adapted to film. Directed by Barry Jenkins, she played Adrienne Hunt alongside Aunjanue Ellis, Regina King and Coleman Domingo. The film was nominated for over 130 awards, including 3 Oscars, 2 Golden Globes, 2 BAFTA'S, and 5 Critics' Choice Awards. With these two projects, Ebony was further expanding into both television and film.
In 2018 she joined the cast of both Hunters, as Carol alongside Al Pacino, Logan Lerman, and Lena Olin, and Wu-Tang: An American Saga as Nia alongside Ashton Sanders and Erika Alexander. Both projects shot simultaneously, and while on set for 'Hunters' she got the call to be a lead on Tyler Perry's Sistas as Karen. This role would lead to her starring as Lena, a late teen who forgoes college to join the army after losing her first love, in the 2024 Netflix feature film, The Six Triple Eight, inspired by the true American story of the 6888th Central Postal Battalion. Comprised of 855 women of color, the first of its kind, these soldiers cleared 17 million pieces of backlogged mail, successfully reconnecting soldiers to their loved ones back home during WWII.
