Nicolas van Hemelryck Rodriguez is a filmmaker with a background as a photographer and an architect (Magna Cum Laude) and with minors in Economics and Literature. His filmmaking work explores storytelling as the basis of collective ‘meaning-making’ and thus, of our behavior and relationship with everything around us.
His latest film Alis (2022, co-director and producer) has won 30 international awards including Berlinale’s Crystal Bear and Teddy Award. His debut Amazona (co-director and producer) premiered at IDFA and was nominated as Best Ibero-American Film at the Goya Awards. As a cinematographer he was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Fenix Awards. As a photographer his work has been exhibited in America, Europe and Asia.
Nicolas just finished the shooting of Dorule, his first fiction film (short), where he writes, directs and produces alongside his partner Clare Weiskopf. Together they are developing El Dorado, Nicolas and Clare’s first fiction feature, in co-production with Romania, Spain, Portugal and Denmark, and his work has been supported by institutions like Ibermedia, Sundance, Catapult, the IDFA Bertha Fund, Chicken & Egg, Tribeca, FDC-Proimagenes, the Romanian Film Center and Señal Colombia.
Nicolas co-founded PI: Colombian Independent Producers Association, DOCCO Distribution and Promotion Agency, and Casatarantula where he has been in charge of all productions. He has co-produced with Romania, Chile, France, USA, Scotland, Mexico, Spain, Cuba, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Portugal and Brazil. He has been a film advisor and professor at EICTV (Cuba), Intl. Encounter of Producer at FICCI and in various national film schools, and has been a jury member for film competitions like HotDocs Crosscurrents, the IDFA Forum and Colombia’s National Film Fund. Nicolas is an EAVE graduate and a member of the Colombian Film Academy, Cinema23 and the Collective Change Lab Community of Practice.
