Brett Johnson was born in Pasadena, California, and was raised between northern California and Georgia. He graduated from Petaluma High School, and attended UC Riverside before he was hired on the second season of Mad Men. During the third season he was hired to write a freelance episode, The Grown Ups, which was subsequently nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award. He was promoted to Staff writer for season four, promoted to Story Editor season five, after which he left to work on Ray Donovan.
