Azhagam Perumal is an Indian film director and actor who works predominantly in the Tamil film industry. He began his career in cinema after graduating with a Gold Medal from the Adyar Film Institute in 1991, despite initial opposition from his family who wished for him to pursue engineering.
He first gained experience working as an assistant director to the acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam on several projects, from Thalapathi to Iruvar.
Azhagam Perumal made his acting debut in a small but memorable role as a quirky house owner in Mani Ratnam's film Alaipayuthey (2000). While he received more acting offers after this, he initially focused on directing.
His directorial debut was the successful romantic comedy Dumm Dumm Dumm (2001), starring R. Madhavan and Jyothika, which was produced and scripted by Mani Ratnam. He also directed the films Joot and Udhaya, the latter of which faced production delays before its release.
Following his directorial ventures, Azhagam Perumal concentrated solely on acting, becoming known for his versatile and character-oriented supporting roles. Some of his notable acting appearances include the gangster film Pudhupettai (2006), the sci-fi thriller 7 Aum Arivu (2011), Karnan (2021), and the popular black comedy Naanum Rowdydhaan. He has also worked in web series, including The Family Man and Navarasa.
