Quicksand

Quicksand was meant to be a second rate film noir but instead ends up being a silly third rate crime drama.

Dan Brady (Mickey Rooney) is a mechanic who steals $20 from his boss's cash register so he can have a date with blonde femme fatale Vera Novak (Jeanne Cagney.)

To pay back the money, Dan buys a watch for $100 in easy instalments and later pawns it for $30.

Only for an investigator to track Dan down and accuse him of theft. Dan never owned the watch to pawn. To pay back the full cost of the watch to the jewellery store he mugs a drunk.

Later shady owner of an arcade Nick Dramoshag (Peter Lorre) who has his own history with Vera finds out that Dan robbed a man. Nick pressures him to steal a car from Dan's employer.

That only lands him in more trouble as his boss figures out that Dan robbed the car.

Quicksand is a morality tale about crime does not pay. However both Dan and Vera are idiots who do or say even more absurd things making their situation worse.

It is hard to believe that former girlfriend Helen hangs on to Dan and tries to save him when he is acting so stupid.
