Dead For A Dollar : Cool Name, Mediocre Movie

Handsome George Hilton, slippery John Ireland, and a fat blustery Portuguese each try to outmaneuver the others in order to make off with the two-hundred-thousand dollars in stolen money taken from them by the deceased Gordon Mitchell.

Sometimes this spaghetti western is amusing but mostly it's pretty talky stuff. Ireland and Hilton are game but this tries to be another The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly without any real visual excitement or fun twists in the story. These two have definitely done better.

The worst part of the film (and I mean worst!) occurs near the end, a disgusting dinner scene between George Hilton and the dressmaker (Why wasn't she shot before this?) as they smack their dripping greasy chicken, the camera lingering on closeups of them chewing the stringy chicken with oily open mouths and food hanging out!

At over a hundred minutes the movie wasn't too long already that they had to include this?! It was pointless, irritating, and gross! Obviously they struck a raw nerve, at least with this viewer!

too slow, too boring, everything takes too long to happen

I like Hilton and Gordon Mitchell so I gave this one a try. The DVD I saw is an ugly, full-frame transfer, probably from VHS. English dub. It's a "funny" story of a man (Hilton) that runs afoul of a gang of three bank robbers (Mitchell, John Ireland, Piero Vida). The robbers are busy trying to double-cross one another and Hilton joins the party. A pretty blond (Sandra Milo) takes her turn at tricking each of the men also. The story is very reminiscent of double-cross pics like ONE DOLLAR TOO MANY or ANY GUN CAN PLAY. However, this film is a little tedious, a little boring. Some of the comic scenes are pretty well-done but the action sequences are slow-moving, boring, very poorly staged. Generally the pacing of the film is too slow, too boring, everything takes too long to happen. Music is an annoying carnival-style motif which is supposed to sound whimsical but features too much acid rock-style organ and guitar. Mitchell's part FWIW is basically a cameo, he is dead after 15min of the film. Hilton is charming but can't save the film on his own. As of this writing the full film is available on YouTube. 5/10 stars.

Very mediocre Spaghetti Western with familiar cast , concerning a loot from a twisted bank robbery

The movie gets the usual Italian Western issues , such as greedy antiheroes , plot twists , violent facing off , quick zooms , shootouts exaggerated baddies , among them , but it results to be overtalking , too tiring , too slow , as well as everything takes too twists and turns . Dealing with various bandits : chieftain Roy Fulton (Gordon Mitchell) , mischievous Glenn (George Hilton) , the Colonel (John Ireland) and Portugues (Piero Vida) searching for a fortune in loot stolen a bank heist , meanwhile a roguish , naughty lady (gorgeous Sandra Milo) deceive them here and there by taking the stolen dollar bills . Ultimately , all of them attempt to recover the money at whatever cost and they'll stop at nothing to get it . But treason emerges and others join the scramble for the cash . As everyone has their own agenda to achieve thrir ambitious purports .

A regular Pepperone Western that certainly has an enthusiastic cast , and including usual ingredients as thrills , crosses , double-crosses , crossfire and some hilarious touches . Concerning the classic plot about a bank robbery going wrong due to the death of the bandit leader , resulting in three of the robbers attempting to obtain the loot and finally all three gunslingers find out that a shrewd dressmaker is taking advantage of them by replacing the dollars with paper or rag scraps . It develops a lot of cat and mouse games in which protagonists dupe , betray , cheat and steal the money for themselves . It is a mediocre and poorly staged Spaghetti Western that turns out to be dull and boring , that's why it's obscure and below average . The movie is running out of ideas a bit ; nevertheless , it still contains some amusing and funny scenes . Stars the Uruguay-born George Hilton who was a Spaghetti first-star as he proved in a number of Spaghettis , such as : ¨ Sartana no perdone¨ , ¨Go kill and come back¨ , ¨Kitosch¨ , ¨They call me Alleluja¨ , ¨Ruthless four¨ , ¨Alleluja for Django¨ , and also played successful Giallios such as : ¨The strange vice of Mrs Wardh¨ , ¨The scorpion's tale¨, ¨All colors of the dark¨ , ¨My deal Killer¨ . He teams up , as co-protagonists with familar faces as John Ireland , Sandra Milo and Gordon Mitchell . And the ordinary support characters who accompanied to starring in the multiple Spaghetti Westerns in the 60s and 70s , such as : Mimmo Palmara or Dick Palmer , Piero Vida , Franco Ressel . And brief acting from Enzo Andronico , Andrea Scotti , Giovanni Ivan Scratuglia , Roberto Mesina and Benito Pacifico , all of them played short appearances in a large number of Pasta Westerns.

Osvaldo Civirani's direction is middlingly crafted , here he is more inclined towards twisted messes with nonsense and it packs little action , exception for its final part in which there's a long shoot'em up . He directed this so-so western , genre in which he would not only excel but one where he would spent much of the rest of his career , as he wrote/directed some Spaghettis , such as : "Rick and John, Conquerors of the West" , "Trusting Is Good... Shooting Is Better" , "Two Sons of Trinity" . Although he also directed other genres as Peplum : ¨"Kindar the Invulnerable" , "La Magnifica Sfida" , ¨The adventures of Hércules¨ and thrillers/Eurospy genre as "The Beckett Affair" , and "Operazione poker" . Rating : 4,5/10 , very average . Only for Spaghetti hardcore aficionados .

it ain't no john wayne western

Looks like this one had many names over the years -- the DVD case says "Dead for a Dollar", but apparently it's also known as "Trusting is Good, Shooting is Better!", as well as various titles in various countries. I saw the 91 minute DVD version, which has English dubbing, thank goodness. Stars Jorge Acosta Y Lara aka George Hilton, born in Uruguay, as Glenn Reno, on a mission. "The Colonel" is played by John Ireland, who has quite the interesting story on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ireland_(actor) Such a rambling plot, although it looks like there are about fifteen minutes missing in the version I saw. Everyone seems to be searching for the buried loot. Shooting. Killings. Digging. Great outdoor scenery. Written by Tito Carpi. Directed by Osvaldo Civirani... looks like his brother Walter was the camera-man on all his projects, a family affair. Moves crazy slow. I wonder if the original script was any more exciting than what we hear in English in the dubbed version. Sound and picture quality are terrible, but it does seem to be a copy of a copy....?
