Loved the song and bought it when it originally came out. For some reason didn't see the film at the time. After watching other westerns released at a similar time decided it was time to watch Soldier Blue.
To say I was disappointed is putting it mildly. I guess I was expecting a more serious portrayal of the reasons for the attitudes of the US military and government towards the native population at the time.
What we got however was an initial native attack on a small military party followed by an extended falling in love story between two unlikely individuals. Following this the climatic end scene of the attrocity that was a real event.
At no point in the lead up to this was the reason for the attack or the attitude of those involved to explain the utter brutality and hatred behind it.
A great chance was missed here by the film makers to explain to the viewing public what really was going on in the minds of the powers that be in the developing years of the USA as it expanded westwards.
It looks now many years later like just another sleazy exploitation film.
