    Not a Lot to Say

Another Melies work where what seems to be Faust or Faustus is depressed because he has nothing in his life--particularly love. So he strikes a deal with Mephistopheles. This is so short on wonders if it was just part of the many experimental moments that Melies did as he prepared for larger, more interesting film. There is the usual business with quick cuts to bring characters magically into view. But I can't even express an evaluation of plot or character. This film was made in 1897 and is one of many of these little vignettes. I will probably be commenting on some others from time to time. The canon is great.
