    Outer Space Woody

Was very fond of Woody Woodpecker and his cartoons as a child. Still get much enjoyment out of them now as a young adult, even if there are more interesting in personality cartoon characters and better overall cartoons.

That is in no way knocking Woody, because many of his cartoons are a lot of fun to watch and more and also still like him a lot as a character. He's fun enough and isn't obnoxious, but this is not the manic Woody of his early cartoons. Woody tended to be toned down in personality in comparison at this point, and he is pretty subdued here. He works very well with the professor character though who is wonderfully nuts.

It's fairly light on story, which can make the momentum sag a bit and the antics on the moon veer on typical and repetitive.

Like all of the Woody Woodpecker cartoons around this period, the animation is the weak link. Time and budget constraints shows in some of the animation, which is a little rushed looking in the drawing and detail wise it's on the simplistic and careless side like many of Woody's cartoons from this period continuing through to the 60s.

On the other hand, the music however is bouncy, energetic and very lushly orchestrated, not only synchronising and fitting with the action very well but enhancing it. Most of the cartoon is lively in pace.

Most of the gags, while never hilarious, are amusing and timed well. The ending was a good surprise.

In conclusion, decent if not great. 6/10 Bethany Cox

    Cheerful Late Woody Woodpecker

Professor Dingledorff made it to the moon a couple of years ago. That's the last heard of him. The International Rocket Society has another ship ready to go, but no volunteers. So they send Woody Woodpecker.

Woody Woodpecker's glory days were behind him -- as, indeed, were those of classic theatrical cartoons -- but he was still Walter Lantz's best-known cartoon character, and so he appeared in this cartoon, which has a decent number of. Gags. Good voicework, and visuals that are, alas, not much better than TV cartoons of the period.

    • Trivia
At the time of this short's release, Sputnik had been launched two years before (1957), while Sputnik 2, carrying Soviet astro dog Laika soon followed. The first manned landing on the moon was still a decade into the future, though with equipment quite different than what's shown. Space science fiction would grow increasingly popular in the ensuing years.
