Tom Noonan is brilliant. His direction & acting performance are excellent. Though 'lonliness' is not an uncommon theme in many films, I think this film anticipated the situation many people would find themselves in this 'brave new world'. Sweet, heartfelt, tragic and wonderful. Highly recommended for fans of obscure but very cool low budget indipendent films.

I didn't know what to expect with this movie and, had it not been showing on the Independent Film Channel, a channel I am biased towards, I probably would have continued surfing. But, I hung in there and was amply rewarded. Tom Noonan did an excellent job of presenting these two very lonely people. I was particularly aware of their "real" personalities versus the personalities they presented to the outside world. To me, they seemed like "normal" people whenever they spoke of law firm where they work as opposed to how they were when they were in the now of their "date", there at her house. I thought the cinematography was excellent. I highly recommend this film.

A good little film with a dark edge to it. What's most amusing about the negative comments on this page is the outrage over the fact that the movie's content didn't match the video box artwork. If you're foolish enough to make your rental decisions based on a video box cover, then you get what you deserve. If you're looking for an offbeat and quirky movie about a first date gone very wrong, then you might enjoy "What Happened Was". If not, then let me suggest that you stick to poop like "You've Got Mail."
A two person play brought to film. But oh my what two people! I usually hate plays brought to the "big-screen" but somehow this really works quite well. The combination of great acting and cinema camera work makes it feel more intimate. I went in with no expectations of any kind. Didn't read anything about it. It is a current offering on Criterion (3/2023) and just went for it and I'm so glad I did. All I'll say is an emotional look at relationships and loneliness. And now just drivel to make up for IMDBs stupid character count. Like "great" isn't a worthy review of something all by itself. Now everyone writes the plot instead of a review.
