After spending years in the Peruvian jungle during his tour in Army Special Forces, Cascade PD Detective James Ellison developed hyperactive senses, which came back to him five years after his return to the US. He can see people in darkened windows at night from two hundred yards, hear the music playing on the radio of the car he's chasing after he's lost sight of it, and can distinguish between wood and plastic after both have been in a three thousand degree fire. Blair Sandburg, a local anthropology student, tells Ellison that he is a "Sentinel," who in ancient tribes would protect the village and seek out game using such hyperactive senses. Sandburg becomes Ellison's back-watcher and teacher of how to use his new powers as Ellison brings a whole new edge to the war on crime in Cascade, Washington.

Jim tries to find a way for Sandburg to help him on duty. They need to talk to the Captain, but a terrorist manages to take control of Police Headquarters. Sandburg is one of the hostages. Ellison and Captain Banks try to figure a way to free all the hostages and take out the terrorists.

Blair's mother tries to help him out by giving his dissertation to a friend whose a publisher, so he can proof read it. He wants to publish it, soon everyone knows Jim's secret. The courts want to review all his cases, Jim is now plagued by people who want to meet the Sentinel, which causes problems as he tries to track down an assassin. Blair must decide whether which is more important his friendship with Jim, or his paper.

Cold medication messes with Ellison's senses while Jim and Blair try to defend a state protected witness and his female lawyer from attacks on a train.

Sandburg takes Ellison to a monastery for what he hopes is a relaxing vacation. Jim isn't enthusiastic about this idea. One of the monks is murdered and the two visitors are the prime suspects.

Jim and Blair visit Storm Island to celebrate Jim's Coast Guard Cousin Rucker's birthday. With a storm rolling in, they rescue Monique, runaway mistress of a drug lord. They find she is not what she seems when the cartel comes after her.

Simon Banks and his son Daryl disappear from an anti-drug conference in Peru. Blair insists on going with Jim to rescue the Captain and his son, even if it means he has to jump out of an airplane and face drug runners.

Alexis attempted to kill Sandburg before escaping. Ellison arrives and tries to revive his friend. Then they head to Peru in pursuit of Alexis.

Ellison nearly crashes into the car of a computer hacker. The enraged man stalks Ellison, complicating the safe cracking case Jim is working.

A present day murder leads to a revelation that may be able to finally clear up a 45 year old murder, and vindicate the victim and the boy (now a troubled, haunted man) who saw it happen. And Jim discovers a new ability.
