Finally, a recent movie about Catholics that isn't bending to the RSS-supported negative stereotype! Perhaps that's because it was made in the south, another place not looked upon too kindly by Hindutvadis. Kajol wants to be a nun, not because of western brainwashing or because she wants to hide from the world (as in yeh zindagi ka safar), but because she feels drawn to God and sees the church's emphasis on social work as something she really wants to have a part in. (Also doesn't want the shackles of marriage.) She looks stunning, as always -- she outshines her cousin (Rani) everywhere she goes. She is loved first by Thomas (Aravindsami plus 30 lbs and a whole lot of whitening creams since Bombay 2 years earlier?) and then by Deva (Prabudeva), who was sent by Thomas to woo her in his stead (very Shakespearean). There is a breathtaking semi-salsa dance scene with Kajol and Prabudeva, where he really proves his talent. Kajol, loves the church, is loved by two men who are friends.... which will she choose? You are really kept in suspense until the end!
I did watch this movie on DD/Podhigai channel on TV at midnight fully for the first time and I should really say that it still isn't that bad and was interesting enough and really got a bit of nostalgia. There are just very few movies like this that shows the initial stage of the development of love between couples and this is one of those gems that shows off the real facts, the music just elevates the whole film to a different level and watching it after listening to those songs for thousand times elevates it to a very different level.
I think this is the first movie where GVM was seen on screen, shot when he was an assistant for Rajeev Menon.
Still relevant, even after 20+ years, just fantastic.
I loved this film, which I watched quite awhile back, but still remember very clearly. All the songs were excellent, including amazing dance sequences (props to Prabhu!), and Kajol was beautiful, as always. One of the best songs in the movie includes a parade, great choreography with both Prabhu and Kajol. In the film, Kajol's character wants to become a nun, and is dedicated to God. However, Arvind's character loves her, and would do anything to have her love him, so he hires another guy (Prabhu) to do the work. As it turns out, Prabhu's character falls in love with her. So now, the girl is caught between two guys while she is aspiring to become a nun. And when you're a nun, there is no time for men...so it seems like the perfect solution. However, she is torn between her choices... I recommend that you watch this movie, because it has a great plot, a WONDERFUL ending, great music and all in all, it's just plain entertaining!
I have to say this is one of the finest stories in India cinema. The acting is stellar. Kajol is fantastic, and i enjoy her more playing roles that are out of her norm. The one thing i have to say about this movie is that the music is fantastic. The other thing, its a very colorful and hilarious movie and a bit of a tear jerker towards the end. Although one many not recognize the other lead actors, although they are quite famous in the south. I think the ambiguity that these actors bring works in the movies favor. The musical numbers are very well directed, and they transport you into another world. Especially the song "chanda re" it is beautifully choreographed. You will definitely be humming to the movies tune long after you have watched it.
This movie, my all time favorite... The very soul of the movie is, Music... A.R.Rahman have done his very best in producing music such as Vennilave Vennilave... Strawberry Kannae song, has been my all time favorite... Choreography is definitely something one will cherish for... Such a colorful movie and not the usual flicks in tamil cinema that were present around the same timeline! I have seen once in theater, I have seen tens on TV's and I have seen it hundreds on my computer, and i will watch it for thousands! Why? it's not just a movie for me, its the timeline, that I can very much relate and re-stroke my precious childhood memories!
