Journalist Guy Foster refuses to accompany wife Melissa to a party, he later gets a call from her to meet up, when he arrives there, she's been found murdered, and Guy is the number one suspect.
Melissa's note takes Guy to Elvingdale, he encounters Peter Antrobus and his sister Mary. Guy is implicated in the death of Mary and the later attack on Joyce Dean. Inspector Carter is struggling to believe Guy's stories.
