Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber

A risqué little romcom that, nevertheless, has its moments

Katya (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is an advertising executive with an abundance of talent. However, she is prone to coming in late, taking early and long lunches, and pursuing personal interests while at work. Most importantly, she is driven to become a somebody in San Fran and is constantly searching for that rich, high-profile husband. Oh, and she is ruthless to those who stand in her way. On the elevator, she meets a dreamboat named Charles (Colin Ferguson) but plays it cool. In the meantime, she is fixated with getting an invitation to THE social event of the season. One day, again on the elevator, Charles stops the contraption and insists she have dinner with him. She accepts. That big spender, Charles, he takes her out to sit by a fountain and snack on hotdogs from the stand. Is this man really the stepping stone to her big plans to be the "it" girl of this season and of those to come? Doris Day fans, beware. You will probably enjoy this romantic comedy, as I did, but this is not your mother's romcom. It has some risqué ideas and situations that make it a bit of a walk on the wild side, at times. However, Hewitt is adorable and beautiful as the girl with a mission and Ferguson is quite a pleasure as the love interest. The script has some marked originality, which is always welcome, and the costumes and San Francisco setting are to be greatly enjoyed. If you decide to watch this film, do make sure teenage girls are not hovering over your shoulder. This is not a good choice for impressionable girls. But, for those adult romance fans, add this one to your viewing list, by all means. True love and happy endings are still what most of us live for and this movie delivers on this account, yes.

Great outfits, what a cutie!

In the same vein of Confessions of a Shopaholic, Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber mainly borrows from the title rather than the plot or type of protagonist. Sure, there are tons of adorable fashion ensembles for Jennifer Love Hewitt to wear, and she narrates her journey as she tries to get ahead in her career, but she doesn't have an addiction problem and she's not particularly endearing.

Instead of being unable to stop shopping and brightening her life with material things, Jennifer just wants to become successful and popular. She's willing to do anything to get one rung higher up, and along the way she meets a gorgeous and wealthy guy: Colin Ferguson. Ladies, he's just as yummy as he is in Cedar Cove, but he doesn't have any complex character to work with. He's simply eye candy. In fact, in one scene, he takes his shirt off in the most random situation ever. It's so random, both he and Jennifer actually giggle at the ridiculousness of it all.

But does anyone popping in this movie actually care at a sensible plot? Probably not. You'll be watching it for Jennifer's cute outfits and to see how she can win success, money, popularity, and an insanely gorgeous guy.

not the best TV movie out there.

Very clichéd but fun

This film is about a woman who does everything to climb up the social ladder, and pretends to be someone who she isn't.

I bought this film for 1 pound, and it was not even second hand. Hence, I did not have much expectations for it.

It is obvious that this is made for TV. The close ups are too close that the face occupies 95% of the screen. The way the camera moves between Frangiapani and Katja in the Indian restaurant looks more like a soap opera than a film. The film is so full of cliché. The obligatory gay friend who is constantly suicidal is too over the top that is almost derogatory.

Despite all these shortcomings, I confess that I enjoyed the film. It is fun, brain-off film that makes you forget your troubles. Jennifer Love Hewitt looks stunning in the film. It's a comedy that works!

Kayta Later

Jennifer Love Hewitt has always been the beautiful face I looked when watching an episode of the Drama Ghost Whisperer and the lady I always thought was never the greatest actress, but an actress with large potential in some projects. This is not one of them. Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber not only makes up it's own words, but pretty much uses every character/plot point we've seen in a Romantic Comedy, a straight forward Comedy, or a plain Drama. Her character is not only impossible to like, but also a bore and a plain drag to see on screen. Being a TV movie with the minimum length requirement of 85 minutes I thought to myself not to approach this movie in a hard way, but I have too. Its horrible and a dread to watch.

While trying to be funny, it fails, and while trying to be smart, it's dumb. It can never be what it wants. Every character in this movie is a one dimensional mess who was taken straight out of another movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt's character makes you feel you're losing brain cells every time she comes on screen and her over the top, Prima Donna attitude gets incredibly annoying and almost makes it hard to concentrate. While the story is majorly cliché, so is, well, everything else in this jumbled up mess of a movie. Airing on Oxygen, this movie is clear not to have a big budget, but even lower budget films can do better than this. Confessions prove even TV films are less tolerable than bad mainstream ones.

Katya Livingston (Hewitt) is an unlikable Prima Donna who has everything anybody could want, but she still wants more. After hearing about a party that "anybody who's anybody will be at" she can't resist but to somehow bumble her way and show some cleavage to get an invite. She pesters everyone and sucks up to anybody who can get her one step closer to the golden key invite to the party. In the meantime, she slacks on her job as an advertising executive promoting different shampoo products and currently promoting on "The San Francisco Treat" Rice-a-Roni. She loses touch on that to become more focused on her "current dream" of getting the invite.

The "spoiled bitch" attitude gets old and tiresome. When making the protagonist unlikable the whole film and even when giving an apology to people she's hurt, still makes her the most hated person on the screen, its a wonder why we should focus or even give the slightest damn why she's in her position. Why do we care about some "I'm so pretty, you can't get me!" girl when one of the other characters could have had a better movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt's role is lackluster beyond belief making it a wonder why someone of her talent was chosen to play such a low grade, zero part.

There isn't a ton to say about Confessions other than it's a lame, Oxygen TV film. Just because this one has no attract factor doesn't mean other TV films are the same. Lifetime originals like Lost Holiday: The Jim & Suzanne Shemwell Story and Girl, Positive are some of my favorites as far as Television films go and those are so well written they should have been in theaters. Confessions is a bitter movie with low grade acting and a story line to wake the dead. A stuck up girl who for once in a life can't have something she wants? We haven't seen that before, oh no! Starring: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Colin Ferguson, Natassia Malthe, Joseph Lawrence, and James Kirk. Directed by: Dana Lustig.

Really stupid movie

I watched this last night on Oxygen and it was REALLY bad! It was so bad that I could not stop watching it (like an accident that you can't look away from). What on earth were Colin Ferguson and Jennifer Love Hewitt doing in a movie this god-awful! I really like Colin Ferguson and I think he has potential and he wasn't bad in this, but the plot was so ridiculous. Totally stupid and unrealistic. Maybe it was supposed to be like that. It took place in San Franciso (where I used to live) and it could not have been more un-San Francisco. Like someone like Jennifer Love Hewitt is going to be an advertising executive ... gimme a break! I know sometimes you have to suspend disbelief, but this was too much. The movie was trying to be somewhere between Legally Blonde and Bridget Jones Diary, but catering to the absolute lowest common denominator. The writers should be shot!

Pointless waste of time.

Blech! Ms. Hewitt demonstrates more cleavage than talent and an enormous assortment of bras.

The plot is pointlessly humorless: set piece after set piece. . .each less amusing than the previous. Some films are so bad they're funny, but this is one is so bad it's more than a waste of time; say rather it is about as much fun as passing pencils.

This was on the movie channel one rainy morning and there was nothing else to watch. Frankly, I considered going out to mow the lawn at the ten minute mark, but I didn't want to hurt the lawn-mower.

Pass.

A good made-for-t.v. movie!

Saw this one the other night. I thought it was pretty funny. It stars Jennifer Love-Hewitt as Katya, an ad exec. with a couple close friends. She tries to talk to people throughout this movie trying to be the "in-crowd." She learns in the end that it's not really worth trying to be there after she meets a nice guy that falls for her. She ends up hurting him and regrets making a huge mistake. I like Love-Hewitt movies and the characters that she plays in them. I think this movie could/should be a DVD with some extras thrown in. Definitely a movie that you should watch with your partner after you put the kids to bed! 7/10 on this one!

See it for Love

All I have to say is this: the one and only reason to see this movie is because of Jennifer Love Hewitt! She's in practically every scene, and her comedic skills in this film are outstanding. It really shows that she can hold her own amongst this generations best comedic actresses. I haven't laughed out loud at a movie in a long time, and I did at this one because of Love Hewitt's hilarious character!!! One of her best roles EVER, and hopefully she continues to churn out these co-medically brilliant performances! It's about time Hollywood (and the world) tuned into her talent! Overall, the film is a bit cheesy and shallow, but Hewitt's turn as the selfish Katya is amazing, and it's really something that we haven't seen her do before. Quite refreshing!

If you have nothing else to watch....

This was a somewhat entertaining and silly piece of fluff that will keep you from being not too bored. JLH is again playing the perky and cute and always showcasing her assets in another forgettable flick. Here she plays a Paris Hilton type who does what it takes to be seen and her mission is to go to this Royal Ball that is the biggest event of the year. She hits a snag when she meets the man of her dreams and of course dramatic miscommunication ensues. The only comedic highlight is Joey Lawrence playing JLH's gay pal. Again, if you're bored or are a huge JLH fan then knock yourself out, but if not, you're not missing much.

Sexy and Funny T.v Movie!

Jennifer Love Hewit is hilarious as sexy superficial Katya Livingston, a she's kinda played this role before as her character is very similar to her one in Heartbreakers. But still i think she's very funny. Confessions, has a simple plot, a sexy Young socialite, who believes everything can be done fabulously! During this film Katya tries desperately to get into the biggest party of the season, The royal Ball. One problem, the host-est,Dove, hasn't invited her, as she hates her blah blah blah. Anyways its hilarious watching Katya stop at nothing to get in, even almost ruining things with her true love! The highlight of the film for me was Joseph Lawrence, he is so funny as Furguson, Katya's gay best friend. I think this was a brave role for him, seeing as most of the characters he's played have been, tough macho men. This proves how talented he really is, i would recommend this film to people purely for his performance. Plus i think he pulls of the bald look very well! Bald or with hair, he's still hot!

Pretty good, for a JLH movie

I usually detest Jennifer Love Hewitt. Especially after the horrid "The Truth About Love" which I (very unfortunately) happened to watch.

But I must say I was pleasantly surprised by Ms Hewitt in this movie. It wasn't so bad, and in fact, was pretty good if I might add. The movie doesn't make any pretensions about what it's supposed to be i.e. a good, funny, light-hearted piece of fluff. Didn't feel like a made-for-TV movie at all too. I watched it when I was feeling kinda down and it actually did the trick.

Watch it for the air-headed humor, JLH's wardrobe (which fully capitalised on her "bosom buddies", as always), and the zippy dialog.

Oh..and the scene at the fountain with Katya and Charles was really really sweet. Rather believable too. Now, if only I can be as witty as Katya Livingston when I'm sitting at the fountain, munching on a hot dog with my ultimate dream guy......

A Too Vicious Romantic Comedy

17 June 2006. In a daring move, Jennifer Love Hewitt finds herself as a very nasty, not very well liked, and a much off-putting character in this rather overly vicious, narcissistic romantic comedy. Unfortunately, even the personable Hewitt can't quite Teflon coat off the negative vibes of her character making this film hard to enjoy with such an unlikeable character. But Hewitt manages to put on a decent performance and go with the script making the overall movie a tolerable, sometimes funny, sometimes despicable experience. The build up is too long in coming, yet the unusual premise of sociopath who gets her due as a romantic comedy is savaged by preserverance and Hewitt. Six out of Ten Stars.

i really enjoyed this film!

i really enjoyed watching this film, i think that the acting was fantastic and both actors and actresses were very good. The plot of the story was based on a very good book that i also enjoyed reading by the fabulous author Adele Lang. The film was inspiring and was a great laugh and would be enjoyed by many people. I specially enjoyed Katya Livingston's gay best friend who really amused me and really made the film worthwhile. The film is very different from the book confessions of a sociopathic social climber as maybe is not as good as the ending is very different in the book and oxygen film companies changed that and made it worse as in the book there is no happy ending and things turn out a lot different. but overall i think that the film was a worthwhile watch and would very much like to see it again!

Cinderella's mean step-sister goes to the ball!

Like Cinderella in reverse- if the focus were on one of the step-sisters instead. And she's bad! She's really, really bad!

I did not like the main character at all, and her character arc felt forced and fake. As a fan of Jennifer Love Hewitt, I watched this for her, and that was really my only reason for watching. It's an okay movie, but nothing special. Most suited to fans of the stars only.

Slapstick comedy.

In the world we are living nowadays, it's sadly at times that appearances matter before everything else. And watching it being played out, maybe kind of funny and a little poignant as well.

Katya Livingston (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is a 28-year-old advertising executive who will do anything to climb up the San Francisco's social ladder. Though she is an asset to the advertising company she works for, she has always been wanting to live it up and be part of the thick of things in the San Francisco's socialite scene.

When it became very clear that she was not invited to a ball, she was clearly furious and had been trying means and ways to crash into it after even learning her own friends are being invited. In the midst of all these things, Katya had been trying to search for her Mr. Right and though her friend in the office told her that what Katya wanted is only all in her dreams, the latter insisted that her Mr. Right is really out there.

And it happened to be the one she once met at the lift lobby at the place where she works. She soon learnt the name is Charles (Colin Ferguson).

On the day of the ball, Katya's two friends managed to find a way out for her to enter. And when the hostess saw Katya, catfight ensued before it was revealed later in a speech presentation which Katya has to make (the ball was the benefit of the poor African children and Katya happened to have adopted a son from Uganda) that whatever she did was the sake to be part of the social scene. And she is not as perfect as what everyone else thinks.

So, did Katya eventually get what she really wanted in the end? Well, unless you are watching it.

This is like one of those kind of slapstick comedies I had expected. Recommeded for those who like some fun and laughs.

I confess to loving "Confessions!"

I loved this movie! I thought it was a campy, soapy, sexy, and salacious romp in the hay! And shocked that it was made for TV. It could've been released theatrically.

Love was fantastic as the fabulously ruthless Katya Livingston. And Colin Ferguson was not only excellent as her love interest, but incredibly charming. Did I mention sexy?

The writing was dead on and the directing was great. Very fun. Very stylized. Kudos to the film for raising the bar on made-for-TV movies and being a pure pleasure to watch from beginning to end!

A must see!

She does the job!

JLH sheds her goody-two-shoes persona for a hard-driving character that makes this movie WORK! Katya is a non-naive ingénue to the workplace; she's a predator who understands what needs to be done in corporate America. She'll do what it takes to be successful in the world of fashion journalism. Especially delicious are the scenes wherein the in vogue bars change constantly...anyone who has lived in the city has gone through that. In this movie, we see Katya's great heart that is only covered up her desire to climb the corporate ladder. We see Katya's desire for the "perfect" man interfere with her career goals. Watch the movie to find out how she resolves the conflict. I hope JLH explores her full range of acting ability and singing ability both of which are proved in this film.

I have great hopes for the Ghost Whisperer on CBS this fall.

credits have an error!

My daughter's dad, Peter Anthony Abrahams, was in the bunny suit. I have JLH's autograph to prove it! I think because there was a similarly listed performer, the picked the wrong person.

I remember being so jealous, pregnant at the time, that she was in lingerie and rubbing all over him!! Glad she's a nice person :-)

I enjoyed the movie, it was fluffy fun. I hope JLH comes back to our island for more work. It was exciting for us all, as she was a gave of mine from TV.

I think movie makers should seriously reconsider such lengthy movie titles.
