How could the writers be THIS stupid?!

According to IMDB, the inspiration for this episode is "The Joey Bishop Show" and how the writers disliked him and wrote terrible things in the script's margins...and then deleted them before Bishop would see them! So, even though Rob, Sally and Buddy seem incredibly stupid, there IS precedent for this!

Rob, Laura, Sally and Buddy are preparing to go to a show when they realize something awful...they accidentally gave Alan Brady the wrong script. Why is this so bad? Well, they wrote all sorts of insulting things about him in the script...their copy only...but now that Alan has it, they might all get fired. So, instead of going to the show, they are in for an evening of breaking and entering in order to replace that script.

This and the episode where Laura divulges to America that Alan is bald are two of the only episodes I can think of where Alan is NOT an awful jerk. See the show...see what I mean.

This is a highly enjoyable episode...one of the better ones of season five. Silly and very enjoyable.

STORY, PAGE ONE. INSULTS, PAGE TWO.

Ya, we all know (by the fifth season) Alan Brady was something to be desired, however there's something else to this story. The writers took it in another direction, and it's rather clever.

Rob, Sally and Buddy are putting together a script for picky, picky Alan. Naturally, tempers flare and they write some not too flattering notes about him in the margins. Sure enough -- and by Murphy's Law graces -- the script gets sent to his office. Now what?

Here's the angle. The guys have to sneak around in the middle of the night and snatch it back. This is FUN. Good chance writers Carl Kleinschmitt and Dale McRaven had the caper film TOPKAPI in mind, that premiered about a year earlier. All about thieves breaking into a museum. So why not break into Alan's office??? Just as adventurous, that is for 30 minutes or so.

Look for old timer Forrest Lewis as the night watchman, often seen on ANDY GRIFFITH. In memory of both Kleinschmitt and McRaven who both passed in 2022. Dale McRaven created MORK AND MINDY.

Why we love this show. SEASON 5 EPISODE 26 remastered CBS dvd box set. Final season collectors edition. Thank you CATCHY TV and METV for the memories.

    • Trivia
This episode was inspired by writers Carl Kleinschmitt and Dale McRaven's own experiences writing for The Joey Bishop Show (1961). Joey Bishop could be very hard on the writers at times and they often added their insulting comments about Joey in the margins of their scripts. They would white them out before Bishop saw them.

When the gang enters Alan's outer office, a shadow of the boom mic can be seen on the hallway door.
    • Quotes

Rob Petrie: Why did you two have to type the words in? Isn't saying it enough?

Buddy Sorrell: No, there's somethin' about seeing it in print that's much better than hearing it in spoken.

Laura Petrie: Listen, maybe if you explain to Alan...

Rob Petrie: Honey, how much explaining can you do between "You're" and "Fired"?

Laura Petrie: Well, Rob, you're gonna have to do something!

Sally Rogers: Yeah, how about let's get police protection, huh?

Rob Petrie: I got it. I know how to get into Alan's office.

Buddy Sorrell: What are you gonna do? Pick the lock with a telephone?

Rob Petrie: [dialing the desk phone] No, I'm gonna call Mac the night watchman.

Buddy Sorrell: [sarcastically] Oh, that's right. He's got a skeleton phone.
