I admire the practical effects, puppetry and stagecraft of this episode. The detail that it's based on the Persephone myth is interesting. But it doesn't forgive how cringe inducing the episode.gets.
It really brings to mind peak Lexx. A series which it already is a little too similar to.
There are a lot of scenes which are already awkward circumstances, and they go on for too long.
A large part of this is that there is little to no comedic relief, as we usually have in other episodes. Chiana and D'Argo are not in this one, and without them most of the more fun crew interactions are absent.
The sexy time music popping up every 5 minutes begins to get nauseating as well.
Topping it off they do a kind of Deus ex Machina in one place in a way that looks like it should have caused long term damage to the two characters involved. But the way it's done I'm willing to bet this won't show up in subsequent episodes.
Overall I found this one to be a let down. The pacing, editing and overall feel was kind of...annoying if I'm honest. Not the usually more balanced and engaging show.
To be fair, this is what happens when you have a show that takes chances. And I respect that. But sometimes experiments don't pan out.
