John Cleese in Fawlty Towers (1975)

Goofs

The Builders

Fawlty Towers

Edit

Continuity

Sybil picks up the phone to call Stubbs and puts it to her ear, but in the following close-up she puts it to her ear again.
When Sybil catches Basil with the closed-off dining room and they start an argument, the door to the rooms upstairs is closed, two shots later it is open, but nobody came or went that way during their conversation.
The position of the tape player and the gnome on the desk changes.
Basil and Sybil come downstairs and Basil says he is going to put the things in the car. Sybil comes over to Polly at reception and in the background Basil can be seen turning directly to the right when he gets outside, even though the car park is directly down the stairs.
The builders turn up at 4pm on the Saturday, at which point Polly has already been asleep for a while. Basil returns on the Sunday morning and Polly is shown to be in a bedroom, fully clothed and still out for the count which means Polly has been asleep for over 16 hours.

Revealing mistakes

When Basil smashes Manuel's head to the wall three times, it is obvious that Manuel kicks the wall to make a sound effect.
When Polly brings Mr. O'Reilly a cup of tea, it is obvious on several occasions that there is nothing at all in the cup. Not only does he hold it in such a way that the inside is visible, but when Basil snatches it away nothing spills out.
When Mr. O'Reily's work is examined by Mr. Stubbs, the new wall blocking the kitchen and dining rooms can be seen to move about quite a bit.
Basil smashes Manuel's head against the door that's been blocked off. Clearly it's just a piece of scenery as it quivers like it was made out of cardboard.
When Mr. Stubbs walks towards the new door and says "What did you use? RSJ?" the camera does a big wobble.

Plot holes

When Basil is arguing with Polly and eventually decides to call O'Reilly, he trips over the gnome. However, when Basil comes out from behind the desk, he takes the gnome out of a side gap in the desk, perfectly out of reach of tripping over it.

Boom mic visible

Just as the Major is saying "Ah, you found it. I knew you would. He lost it, you know," the shadow of a microphone is visible in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
Lifting up out of shot in the top left corner of the screen as Polly passes Basil the stapler.

Character error

Throughout the episode, the grandfather clock in the lobby is stopped at just after twenty-five minutes to six: when Basil and Sybil leave for their trip, when O'Reilly's men arrive, when Basil returns the following morning, and when O'Reilly starts work at '"ten to nine".
