The quirky appeal of this series

I watched this episode tonight because I wanted to see the performance of Elisa Ingram, a beautiful actress of the 1960's who only had a small number of credits. I wasn't entirely disappointed; she didn't have any dialogue, but she looked great in a swimsuit as a member of an Eastern European swim team!

When this series first aired, I would watch it with my Dad, who was fond of it. The humor is very broad, and tonight I was trying to figure out: what was the appeal of the series? It dawned on me that this show is very much like an issue of the old Mad magazine, come to life. The emphasis is on puns, visual humor, and producing some mild chuckles. Episodes often featured a pretty guest actress, such as Elisa Ingram. The show wasn't grounded in reality at all; it was entirely a spoof. If you come to it expecting no more than that, it's entertaining. It probably helped the series to last so long--5 seasons!--that there weren't a lot of other shows like it; and it was probably very inexpensive to make. I rate this episode as typical for the series--mildly enjoyable.

    Annd loving it!!!

Max receives a call from a Russian informant who wishes to provide him with a list of KAOS agents. She reveals herself to be a part of the Russian swim team that will be competing against the American team in the coming days and instructs Max to contact her at the swim meet.

Unfortunately for Max, her name is long and foreign, therefore he can't remember it.

The Chief, 99 and Max must go undercover to retrieve the list and protect the informant from KAOS.

Another hilarious instalment with good performances around, especially from Alice Ghostly as Verna, and a nice underwater fight at the end. Loved the but about the Russian names with Smart getting confused about them.

Greco: You don't look like a trainer to me.

Maxwell Smart: Is that so. Well, I happen to be an expert. Why, I once trained a girl to swim across the English channel four times. Would you believe it, four times!

Greco: I find that hard to believe.

Maxwell Smart: Would you believe three times across the Mississippi?

      Greco: I don't think so.

Maxwell Smart: How about twice around the bathtub?

      [Greco walks off]

Maxwell Smart: [to 99 and the Chief] Once around the bathtub?
