Caroline's First Day

The first episode of this zany comedy has some sped up and slowed down footage to give it a chaotic appearance which is exactly the issues with Dr Caroline Todd (Tamsin Greig) as she starts her first day at work in a new hospital, East Hampton having been locked outside her house and had to sleep in her car.

On her first day she encounters the cool and charismatic Dr 'Mac' McCartney (Julian Rhind-Tutt) and the more irritating Guy Secretan (Stephen Mangan) who invites Todd to stay at his spare room for the night but has other motives.

The hospital has a sex mad Manager Joanna Clore (Pippa Hayward) who wants to appear young and she has a relationship of sorts with the bullying Consultant Radiologist Alan Statham (Mark Heap) who seems to think is amusing.

Clore runs a dysfunctional department whose staff seems not to be doing a lot of work and they have an eccentric Staff Liaison Officer (Michelle Gomez) who does not seem to give a damn especially where Statham is concerned.

The standout is the silly one-upmanship challenges between Mac and Guy such as eating a spoonful of coffee but despite the chaos the first episode felt just a little too long for this type of comedy yet it was a good first episode.

The episode has an early appearance from John Oliver as a car salesman who is now big on US television.

Trivia
Stephen Mangan (Guy Secretan) actually did eat the "expensive" coffee (and the tea, and he doesn't recommend it!)

Goofs
Although this episode takes place during a single day, Boyce and Mac's hairstyles change from scene to scene.
