In The Jaws of the Tiger

"The sleeping Tiger of War", Paladin's friend, Tanaka, assures us, is about to be prodded into wakefulness by a radical cleric from Japan and his Samurai-bodyguard seeking to enter America by posing as Chinese refugees. Thus begins an episode that explores the politics of racial tension, the various responses it triggers, and the contrasting "solutions" offered by men who propose to lead society's marginalized toward full equality with the rest of its citizens. This is actually quite a powerful episode, foreshadowing the turmoil about to engulf 1960's America as the struggle for Civil Rights escalates, and is especially memorable for a strong performance from the young James Hong as a nameless Priest whose preachings clearly do not include "non- violence".

    • Trivia
The historical background of this episode is the Empire of Japan had only recently opened the Japanese homeland to foreign visitors/trade. In order to avoid the fate of other Asian countries and become a colony of European powers, Japan had to establish national independence and equality, while developing military strength.
    • Goofs
The game of Go is rarely shown in Western films. Japanese soldiers play it in "Heaven Knows, Mr Allison", and Veronica Sawyer ("Heathers") has a Go set (not visible in the P&S version). "TRON Legacy" has Flynn playing Go. (Kubrick considered having HAL play Go, but chose chess.)

The scenes with Paladin playing Go are ludicrous. It looks as if someone threw a bunch of stones in the center of the board. Because Go is primarily a game of territorial control (not capture), play begins at the corners, then proceeds along the sides, and finally towards the center. The final scene shows Paladin's opponent moving one of the stones, as if it were a chess piece. (Stones are never moved unless captured.)
    • Quotes

Minoru Takura: This is the place I was telling you about. That's where most of them sneak over.

Paladin: What about the border patrol?

Minoru Takura: They've got one man to cover 50 miles of border. Besides there's a fellow that's made $30,000 just sneaking people across

      Paladin: Mexicans?

Minoru Takura: No, Chinese. no, maybe a few Japanese. Half of them died out there in the desert, but he didn't care. He always collected in advance.

      Paladin: They usually do.
