    Pearl, Pearl, Pearl

Country stars Flatt & Scruggs make their first of seven appearances on the BEVERLY HILLBILLIES in this hilarious episode, cast as themselves, old friends of the Clampetts. When the singing duo writes Jed a letter informing him that they will be in town for an engagement, the family presumes they mean duo are coming to town for one of them to marry Cousin Pearl, the old flame of their youth. The duo were actually referring to a concert they have in the Los Angeles area and in fact are already married - to gorgeous city girls Joi Lansing and Midge Ware (which Lester and Earl admit are "second best" to Pearl). This is an excellent episode and features Flatt and Scruggs singing both the theme song to the show (which they had a number one country hit with, although Jerry Scoggins sings the song on the series' credits) and their comic "Pearl, Pearl, Pearl" number which was also a country hit. Trivia note: this is one of several episodes where Jetherine is neither seen or mentioned although she was living in the mansion at the time with Pearl and her brother Jethro.

    FLATT, SCRUGGS AND PEARL?

Another "lost in the translation" story on steroids, and perhaps, the best of the season. Absolutely no question all the banjo pickin' and fiddlin' played a large part in the show's success, and it's here for the asking.

Legendary country and western musicians Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs write Jed about their coming to Hollywood for an engagement. ONLY problem is Jed thinks they BOTH want to get "engaged" to Pearl, the love of their lives! Hilarious comedy of errors set to music, and for your listening pleasure, featuring their famous rendition of "The Ballad of Jed Clampett.' What a trip.

Paul Henning's script just runs wild, the biggest gag of all when Flatt and Scruggs arrive with their wives(!), at first mistaking Elly May for Pearl (Bea Benedaret)? Model and actress Joi Lansing plays Gladys Flatt, which is even a bigger surprise! Stylish wardrobe changes top everything, thanks to Opal Vils, long time fashion manager for the show. Also applause to hair stylist Francis Sperry and makeup artist John Sylvester. A class act to be sure.

For music buffs, Flatt and Scruggs "Ballad of Jed Clampett" peaked at #44 on Billboard's Hot 100 music charts in December 1962.

Orangey the famous cat also appears, known for scores of tv shows and movies.

SEASON 1 EPISODE 20 remastered CBS dvd box set. Seasons 1 through 5 are available on dvd. According to Amazon, seasons 6 through 9 will be out on blu ray in 2027. Thanks to METV for all the memories.

    Jed Throws a Wingding

Cousin Pearl Bodine had two sweethearts who vied for her affections when she was a young lass.

Now they return to see her. Pearl thinks one or both of them plan to propose to her. She cannot make her mind up which one she should choose.

The two suitors are country singers, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. They even sing the The Ballad of Jed Clampett when they arrive at the mansion.

They just want to see Pearl. Both men are already married. The wives dropped into view Pearl incognito for themselves, having heard so much about her.

Only they saw Elly May instead. They rushed straight to the beauty salon for more work to be done.

Another episode with a singer. It seems there is a run of episodes with famous faces. It is all a bit silly but enjoyable enough.

Lester Flatt: [singing] Pearl, Pearl, Pearl/ don't give your love to Earl/ I have got a horse and mule/ 40 acres near a school/ and we'll be happy as two bugs.

Earl Scruggs: [singing] Pearl, Pearl Pearl/ come be my lovin' girl/ don't you marry Lester Flatt/ he slicks his hair with possum fat/ change your name to Mrs. Earl Scruggs.

Lester Flatt: [singing] Pearl, Pearl, Pearl/ you'll get no love from Earl/ this here man is such a sap/ he won't hold you on his lap/ unless you are an old 5-string banjo.

Earl Scruggs: [singing] Pearl, Pearl, Pearl/ he's nutty as a squirrel/ if you'll be Mrs. Scruggs/ we will live on kisses and hugs/ happy as two...

Lester Flatt: Earl, I think we better stop this song 'cause yonder comes your wife.

Earl Scruggs: Yeah, they're jealous of Pearl as it is.

Lester Flatt: Well, they got a reason to be, 'cause I ain't never seen a girl as pretty as Pearl.

Earl Scruggs: We had to settle for second best.
