    Classic sitcom hijinks

This is quality comedy writing. Classic sitcoms must have plots far beyond real life, otherwise it's just a drama. The characters here are also typical of great comedy; the stern vice principal using formal names, the over-reactive PTA mothers. This is what creates comedy. Nobody "mailed in" this episode. For a Brady Bunch episode, it's a solid 10.

    Excellent.

This was one of the more hard edged story of the Brady Bunch episode. None of the other children had ever been shown to be in major trouble. Greg not only violated the school rule but the law. The Brady bunch episodes were thought to be saccharine but this one is not. I won't give away the ending for those who have not seen it but there are consequences for Greg's behavior. All the cast is priceless in this scene with their reactions to finding out about the goat stealing. Peter and Bobby think it is a person that Greg is hiding and Alice hears Greg talking through the closet and wonders if she is hearing things. All ends well. Robert Reed did an excellent job of directing this.

    A Sheepish Plot

Since it was the last season when this aired, the writers obviously mailed it in with this script. Greg steals another school's mascot & that's about it. When Carol holds a PTA meeting at their house, the goat gets loose & a campy "Scooby Doo style" chase scene ensues. The neighbor from Bewitched Mrs Kravitz aka Sandra Gould & Variety Columnist Army Archerd's wife Selma Archerd appear as PTA parents during the awful goat chase scene.

    THE FAMOUS GOAT SCANDAL!

Comedy writer Milton Pascal wrote this 10 PLUS episode, also known for THAT GIRL. If you were to put together a comedy reel of top Brady Bunch episodes, this would be at the beginning, the most outrageous.

It's the eve of the BIG football game between rivals Westdale and Coolidge High School, and comes the tradition of stealing school mascots. Westdale's bear cub has been stolen, so why not steal Coolidge's prize goat? Greg has the honor of stashing the goat around the Brady homestead --and up she goes to his new attic bedroom, the perfect place?

I agree with the last reviewer, this episode is also a first, because it actually deals with a serious theme. Greg could have been arrested for hiding the goat. Best NOT gone into.

The accent though is comedy and it's bananas. Peter and Bobby think Greg has a secret gal pal stashed upstairs (because he's also talking to the goat).... Mike believes it's time to have one of those father and son chats with Greg. MEANWHILE, Carol holds a PTA meeting downstairs and the goat breaks loose. Perfect timing.

Great bit by Sandra Gould (BEWITCHED) playing very excited Mrs. Gould. It would have been a blast had she played Mrs. Kravatz instead. Look for stern vice principal George Wallace, famous for starring as COMMANDO CODY in the legendary movie serial. Super trivia question.

One of the absolute best, well directed by Robert Reed.

By the way. The real Brady Bunch house is sandwiched between North Hollywood and Studio City, only a few miles from No. Hollywood High School.

Must See TV. From SEASON 5 remastered ABC/Paramount dvd box set. The box set cover is the best.

    • Trivia
The animal trainer's clicker can be heard controlling the goat's movement.
    • Goofs
Between a goat's normal digestion and the length of time it was was left unsupervised in Greg's bedroom, the floor & bed would likely have been covered in feces, yet there was none in any of the scenes.

Mike Brady: [Mike and Greg enter his den] Greg, I want to talk to you.

      Greg Brady: Yes, sir?

      Mike Brady: It's about Raquel.

      Greg Brady: [shocked] Raquel?

Mike Brady: Never mind how I found out about it. The point is, she's in your room, isn't she?

      Greg Brady: [guiltily] Yes, sir.

Mike Brady: Oh, Greg. Your mother and I never questioned your right to privacy, but, I mean, this is carrying things a little too far. Why did you do that?

Greg Brady: I figured I could sneak Raquel in last night and get her out without anyone finding out.

Mike Brady: [shocked] You mean she's been here all night?

Greg Brady: Dad, I was stuck. There was no place else I could take her!

Mike Brady: [exasperated] Oh... I am trying very hard to be understanding and I'm losing.

Greg Brady: Okay, Dad. I should have never got mixed up with a beast like that.

Mike Brady: Son, that is a dreadful thing to say about a girl, no matter what she looks like.

Greg Brady: A girl? Dad, I think we may have a communication gap going here. Raquel is a goat. As in nanny.

      [Mike looks confused]

      Greg Brady: You know?

      [bleats like a goat]

Mike Brady: A goat? You mean, a goat goat?

Greg Brady: [laughing] Yeah. You mean, you thought I...?

Mike Brady: [starts chuckling] Sure did, I...

      Greg Brady: [laughing] Oh, no...

Mike Brady: [laughs] Well, why didn't you say so in the first place?

Greg Brady: [laughing] Well, you sounded like you knew.

Mike Brady: [turns serious] The next question is, why are you running a motel for goats?

Greg Brady: [nervously] Well, it's a special goat. She's Coolidge High's mascot.

Mike Brady: [shocked, but amused] You didn't... did you?

[chuckles slightly and sits down next to Greg]

Mike Brady: Yeah, well. Oh. Well, that wasn't the brightest move in the world, son.

Greg Brady: You said you did the same thing in school.

Mike Brady: But I didn't say it wasn't stupid. I also said it was wrong and if you want to know how wrong, you wait'll your mother finds out!

Greg Brady: Does she have to know?

Mike Brady: Greg, you have got to return Raquel, no way out.

Greg Brady: I know, but couldn't I do it slowly, like after the game tonight?

      Mike Brady: No. Look, son...

Greg Brady: Dad, I'm in such a bind! If the guys find out, they'll kill me! It's just for a couple hours!

Mike Brady: [sighs wearily] Well, okay. But just until after the game tonight.

Greg Brady: [happily] Hey, thanks, Dad. You're terrific.

      [leaves the den]

Mike Brady: [to himself] And if your mother *does* find out, you and I and Raquel may be roommates.
