    A Famous Episode

This was another very famous early episode in this great TV comedy series. Who can forget "Mrs. Bronson" (Molly Picon) as the sweet old Jewish woman who wouldn't leave a condemned building? No matter how many threats, she would hold her ground by keeping her cool and offering cake to everyone. The solution at the end turned out to be a neat little twist.

Also, this was the other (there were two) episode in which Al Lewis was not "Leo Schnauser" of the police force. In this one, he played "Al Spencer," a real estate or construction guy who was being driven nuts by Mrs. Swanson because she wouldn't leave.

I thought Lewis was hilarious in this one and apparently the writers did, too. They wrote him into the Car 54 show for the rest of the run.

    • Trivia
The episode was based on a real-life development during the 1950's over the building by Robert Moses of the Cross-Bronx Expressway, whose route cut through (and essentially destroyed) the largely Jewish East Tremont neighborhood of The Bronx.
    • Goofs
When Captain Block is on the phone gathering information about evicting Mrs. Bronson, Toody and Muldoon come into his office saying they were told Block wanted to see them. Captain Block then tells them he needs them to evict Mrs. Bronson. There's no way Block could summon Toody and Muldoon for that task while he was still just getting the information on it on the phone.
