First-rate guest cast enhances a good mystery

The great guest cast and the remarkably fine 35 mm cinematography both help to make this a first-rate episode. The plot would have been good for a mystery novel. Also enjoyable: the woman newspaper owner wears some great 1960's outfits, fun to see! It's made clear we are in some state other than California; Arizona seems the most likely candidate to me, though which state it is, is never specified. The plot does have what I would consider some loose threads, if you think about it, but the story is so interesting, I think that doesn't really matter.

So sit back and enjoy the performances of some of the very best actors and actresses working in 1960's television.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE BURIED HERE?

There's some interesting characters to watch very carefully here, thanks to Al C. Ward, who wrote this sharp episode. Ward would soon became head writer for MEDICAL CENTER.

Not an easy trip for Joe. He gets involved with the gubernatorial cocktail set (everyone is havin' one for the road) and the death of a blackmailer -- which may blow the campaign wide open. This plays like a soap opera at times, but don't get too comfortable as there's always action and a helicopter ride you have to see. Also some snappy dialogue and lots of SECRETS.

Superb cast of veterans, lead by 6 foot 3 cowboy Slim Pickens (as Mike), a staple in many top westerns. His big winded role here is very similar to a part he played on an early episode of the MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW.

Patricia Barry (as Claire) is so much fun to watch, best in roles as a sly lady with something up her sleeve. Then there's brooding John Dehner (playing Jim) with the famous gray moustache. He looks a bit -- at first glance -- like Mr. Drysdale on the BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, but no comedy. I thought it was Raymond Bailey, and what a surprise that would have been! Bettye Ackerman guest stars, another popular actress who you've seen many times, but forget her name.

In the wardrobe department, yes, Joe looks good in a white shirt and tie for a change of pace, especially one that's not ripped or covered with dirt. Also Gail Fisher's wardrobe and hair style looks terrific, more than likely from viewers' suggestions.

The chase scene possibly filmed in the High Desert, around Lancaster, California. If you really want to get away from the city, good choice.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 15 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set. Collectors Edition with a super blue cover.

    • Trivia
The helicopter crash is the same footage used in the pilot The Name Is Mannix (1967).
    • Goofs
Mannix is being driven in a chauffeured limousine owned by newspaperwoman Claire Hanley (Patricia Barry). At one point, he raps on the privacy glass to signal the driver that he wants to be dropped off. The driver immediately steers to the right on a rural highway with no buildings or other vehicles visible on that side of the road. But when the shot changes to show the completion of the maneuver from the front, the limousine is suddenly on a city street with buildings and parked cars lining the street.

Mike Ray: Mannix, I sure hope you like this little ol' state of ours, 'cause it's pretty near a cinch you're gonna get buried in it.
