    An Unexpected Party

Two running themes of Season One were pointless interruptions and authority figures in recognizable uniforms. Well, The Spanish Inquisition combines these two to very memorable effect.

Much has been said about Palin as the nefarious (but ill-prepared) Cardinal Ximénez*. However, his manic performance is complemented by the straight performances by Chapman and Cleveland as his befuddled victims. Chapman is especially good as the jobbing actor who doesn't understand his lines but says them anyway. To this day "Trouble at th'mill" makes me laugh.

There's some other good bits here, but really, this episode will always be remembered for the title sketch, and I think they expected that.

*The real-life figure spelled his name Jiménez.

    Nobody Expects!

One of my Top Five episodes of this show. It is consistent throughout. Carol Cleveland is used quite a bit (can't be bad). The common thread of the title is woven cleverly within the other sketches inside thirty minutes. If your friend is uninitiated, this is a pretty good place to start. I wish I hadn't seen it yet, so I could watch it for the first time.

    • Trivia
Funny enough, the real Spanish Inquisition notified its intended victims well in advance to give them time to get their affairs in order. So, in actual fact, EVERYBODY expected the Spanish Inquisition!
    • Goofs
At the end of the courtroom sketch when the characters stand awaiting the arrival of the Spanish Inquisition, a boom mic is clearly visible in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

      Reg: Trouble at t'mill.

Lady M: Oh, no! What sort of trouble?

Reg: One on't cross beams gone owt askew on't treddle.

      Lady M: Pardon?

Reg: One on't cross beams gone owt askew on't treddle.

      Lady M: I don't understand what you're saying.

Reg: One of the cross beams has gone out of skew on the treadle.

Lady M: Well, what on earth does that mean?

Reg: I don't know! - Mr. Wentworth just told me to come in here and say that there was trouble at the mill, that's all - I didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition!

[the door flies open and in come three Cardinals in red robes]

Cardinal Ximinez: NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise!... Surprise and fear... fear and surprise... Our two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency! Our three weapons are fear, and surprise, and ruthless efficiency... and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope... Our four... no... Amongst our weapons... Hmf... Amongst our weaponry... are such elements as fear, surpr... I'll come in again.

      [They leave]

Reg: [gamely] I didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition.

      [They burst in again]

Ximinez: NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition!... Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms - Oh damn!
