I would watch a series of this!

I totally enjoyed this one, the judge (Dennis Haybert) was awesome, his android "watcher" was cute and great comic relief. Seeing how the judge eventually got to the truth was fascinating to watch. Yes, it was similar to a Western but all the futuristic touches made it different and really fun. Kind of reminded me of an original Star Trek episode. I'm going to watch it again, this is one of my favorites of the "new" Outer Limits.

Hmmmm...more to write. I'm really enjoying watching this entire series for the first time, only 2 out of all the episodes could I not finish. I also like recognizing so many actors from other scifi shows.

The Old West Goes to Outer Space

Dennis Haysbert, who you see everywhere these days, plays a judge who has been sent to a planet that the imperialists of earth have taken under their control. One of the indigenous aliens has killed some of the colonists and is standing trial for it. The killings took place when some of the miners, who are feasting off the natural resources, were at a settlement and took chunks of a valuable ore. Haysbert's character is the perfect judge. He is tough but fair. Unfortunately, the culture is a bit like the untamed West, and lynching has been the order of the day when it comes to the "uppity" natives. Threats are made, as are alliances. Because the people back on earth are suspicious of his motives, they send an attractive female android to keep an eye on him and make sure that he is following protocols. She is a humorous addendum to the story and they have a nice chemistry. Of course, he is committed to finding the truth about the murder charges which makes him pretty unpopular. It's a decent offering but a little too formulaic.

This was a backdoor pilot for a science fiction series which was not picked up. The same was true of Time to Time (2001).
    • Goofs
Judge Joshua said that Judge Roy Bean was "the judge and the marshal for 1,000 square miles" in the Montana Territory. Bean's claim to fame was "the only law west of the Pecos (River)" and his court of fame was in Langtry, Texas. The State of Texas today has an area of over 268,000 square miles. The land area of Harris County (Houston), Texas is just over 1,700 square miles. 1,000 square miles is the equivalent of a land area 40 miles by 25 miles.
