One of the strongest episodes in the series

This episode has a great plot and great characters (and actors). It is - on the whole - a very convincing whodunnit, something you cannot say about some of the other episodes. Maybe it is because of the mystery and the intrigue that the levity seems to come a bit short in this episode. The interactions between Brett and Daniel are a bit infrequent and toned down.

Gladys Cooper does an outstanding job as the Grand-Duchess - a role which would prove to be her last. The other actors in this episode are also doing a good job, even if some of them have to deal with characters that seem to be written a tad larger-than-life.

This is definitely one of the show's strongest episodes - for me it ranks in the top 4.

The best of the series? Hmmm

I found this episode more boring than usual. Yes, boring. This Russian dynasty treasure plot is so uninteresting and those actors lousy, such as the old lady. Rubbish. The villain, the fencer, was excellent because of his villain face. I expected that his presence would put some spice in this flat story...But no. The fencing scenes are too short. That's all I have to say about this tepid episode, the lousiest so far, for my taste. The plot is complex for me, why such a complicated scheme? The director Roy Ward Baker did it only to pay his bills, without any inspiration, except maybe for the fencing lesson, in the first part, camera behind the mask. Forget it.

    The Ozerov Inheritance

Brett and Danny come to the aid of the former Grand Duchess Ozerov (Gladys Cooper) who are now living in hard times.

She wants to establish her claim with the aristocratic Russian royal family killed by the Bolsheviks.

If she can establish her claim, the family can inherit valuable jewellery.

There is a person who has proof, but he has been killed in mysterious circumstances. Also both Brett and Danny are followed by a couple of sinister guys.

Then there is the vile nephew of the duchess, Sergei who would like the inheritance all for himself.

It was a surprise to see Brett going to see another relative. I thought they were all bumped off in the previous episode.

There were no surprises to who the baddie was going to be. The one who was casually give the proof of the inheritance. The big surprise was how long it took for paper to burn or not burn. It must have been wrapped in asbestos.

Lord Brett Sinclair: [as the burly bodyguard enters] Did you ring for room service?

      Danny Wilde: Not me.

Lord Brett Sinclair: [smiling as he notices the mysterious robed young blond girl, then addressing her] May I say that uninvited visitors have never been more...

[wants to extend a greeting to her, but he is halted by the big man]

      Lord Brett Sinclair: ... welcome.

Danny Wilde: [to her] It's lucky you showed up.

      [ineffectually]

Danny Wilde: We would have killed him.

Princess Alexandra: [regarding them coolly, then speaking out imperiously] I wish to identify you.

      [extending her hand]

      Princess Alexandra: Your passport.

      Danny Wilde: All right.

      [surreptitiously to Brett]

Danny Wilde: Do you have your passport?

      Lord Brett Sinclair: Yes.

Danny Wilde: Give it to her.

      Lord Brett Sinclair: Okay.

      [hands it over]

Danny Wilde: [as Brett hands his passport to the bodyguard] Thank you.

      [profusely bowing his head]

Danny Wilde: Oh, she's the Immigration Department. Personalized service.

Princess Alexandra: You are Lord Sinclair.

[Danny gushes appreciatively for his sake]

Princess Alexandra: Thank you for coming.

[whole demeanor changing, as Danny curtsies, and she comes down the stairs, and kisses them both on their cheeks]

Princess Alexandra: I am yours to command.

      [kneeling respectfully]
