    obvious writers block

A real crappy episode except for the performance by karri turner but perhaps she was a bit too busty to play phylis diller ...

    BOY, WAS I WRONG!!

When the show opens with Harm paying tribute to his father (on the latter's birthday) at the Vietnam War memorial, a mysterious-looking woman behind him with whom he enters into conversation, informs him that she is there to pay tribute to Harm's father also, whom she had met 30 years earlier as USO performer Jenny Lake (both are played by Catherine Bell, usually seen as Sarah Mackenzie).

I don't know why but for some reason I was certain the older Lake was played by a female impersonator. However, as the younger Jenny Lake, the very pretty Bell engenders no such misperception. (Also, Karri Turner, although well-meaning, is a pretty bad Phyllis Diller impersonator.)

    Chance to play different characters

The cast play different characters, set around Harm's meeting with Jenny Lake at Christmas 1999 (30 years to the day after Harm Senior was lost over Vietnam).

The cast (wider cast, with some occasional guests actors involved) grab the opportunities with both hands (and, in most cases, reasonable success) in reflecting the manic "live for today" attitude in the war theatre back in 1969.

Nicely played inter-cut scenes between 1999 and 1969 (review written in 2021). The final scene still has power - Harm's character paying tribute to his father (whom we know by this stage, after Season four, died in Russia).

    • Trivia
The weather in the Gulf of Tonkin on Christmas Eve 1969 was pretty bad. Bob almost didn't make it out to the Ranger. When he did, he arrived by helo escorted by gun ships. Due to the bad weather, the show was held on the forward hangar deck. Just try and imagine somewhere around 2500-3000 sailors crowded into an area about 120'x400'. That's what we did. None of us minded a bit. Just having Bob and his troup was great.
    • Goofs
Ticonderoga's 1969 deployment ended in September. She was in San Diego over Christmas and did not deploy again until June 1970.
    • Quotes

Jo Jo: You actually flew missions into China?

Tom Boone: Those missions are secret, Jo Jo. I hope I can count on you. The outcome of the war may depend on it.

Jo Jo: Bob said we'd meet men like you.

Tom Boone: We don't think of ourselves as brave. We're just men doing our job.

Jo Jo: Oh, he didn't say brave. He said "full of crap".

    • Crazy credits
A message appears after the show. It dedicates the episode to Bob Hope and the USO for entertaining the troops during all times of peace and war.
