    Football Hero Needs Waltons' Mountain

Richard Masur puts in strong performance as football player crumbling under academic pressure. Richard Thomas gets to take on role of attorney. Not exactly Perry Mason or even a Virginian episode. Still it's a heart warming look at two families. Good back story about the dangers of smoking. Will Geer provides good support.

    McCarthyism on Waltons' Mountain

A well-written episode that explores the ethics of academic honor codes, in this case one which requires students to rat on each other if caught cheating during exams. Richard Masur is very good as the big-hearted lug who John-Boy defends in front of the university's scary honor council against charges of cheating. Everyone else goes into full Perry Mason mode with John-Boy proving to be a not-too-bad defense attorney and his father giving sage advice. The student-led honor council itself provokes some eye-rolling; it's depicted as a some kind of fearsome kangaroo court where its members are addressed as "sir" and the student defendants may require actual legal counsel. Yikes. In an amusing secondary plot, Will Geer gets to show off his cigarette-smoking skills as Grandpa tries to sway Ben from that nasty habit.

    • Trivia
While eating chicken and dumplings with the Waltons, Tom Povich says that Clarke Hinkle was the greatest football player he has ever seen. NFL and College Football Hall of Famer Clarke Hinkle played for the Green Bay Packers from 1932 to 1941 and held the all-time National Football League (NFL) records for rushing yardage and carries when his playing career ended. He played college football for Bucknell University, where he set several records for the Bucknell Bison football team as a fullback playing offense and defense. During his playing days, he played both offense and defense what was then known as the "era of Iron man" football. Many critics considered him to be "the greatest football player in the world", during his era.
    • Goofs
At dinner, Tom Povich says that he's from a small coal town near Pittsburgh when Grandpa blurts out "Aliquippa," which is about 25 miles outside Pittsburgh. Since Tom doesn't correct him, we can assume that Grandpa is correct. Later, during Tom's hearing, John-Boy says that Tom is from Bridgeton (John-Boy mispronounces it as "Bridgetown"), which is 330 miles to the east of Pittsburgh, on the other side of the state.

Narrator: [narration as John 'John Boy' Walton, Jr. reading from his journal] When I was growing up on Waltons Mountain, the word "honor" was hardly ever used, but its meaning was well understood. Honorable behavior was something that was expected in my family. Therefore, I found it strange when, like every other freshman at school, I was told that honor was a tradition, and that the heart of it was to be found in a system that governed our lives as students, and one that, if ignored, could end our days as members of the student body.
