Hajimari no kodô - awakening

The first episode of 'Ergo Proxy', 'Awakening', is very promising. It's too early to know for sure, but the series seems to hold a suspenseful balance between mystery and action, with bits of worldbuilding peppered throughout.

Technically, the episode was excellent. The animations are crisp and fluid, with a fairly monochrome palette providing a bleak atmosphere. The cinematography is well executed, though perhaps not a masterpiece. Sounds and music are good, and the English dub is pretty solid.

The protagonist seems non-standard and engaging, and the story is interesting, though both have barely been introduced yet. I'm looking forward to watching the next episodes; hopefully the rest will prove to be even better!
