    Where There's a Will

Where There's a Will is a proposed pilot from one of the smaller ITV companies. Apparently made in 1987, it was broadcast in 1989. There is a good reason for the delay, it is rubbish.

With a nod to Moonlighting and the Yuppy, greed is good era.

Charles Crow-Finch (Patrick Macnee) is an inept solicitor on the verge of bankruptcy who is involved in a shady development that has attracted press interest.

His son Rupert (Michael Howe) is philandering playboy who has been acting as a lawyer for a probable shady crime family in the USA.

Rupert is going out with American Cavatina, the daughter of the family that he has been acting for.

It is Cavatina who could come to the rescue of the family's finances when she makes a surprise visit to England. Only she suspects Rupert of being a selfish philanderer.

Of course there was no proposed series. The production values are good which includes a nice police car chase but it is for a pair of possible stolen trousers.

The biggest problem is the script which tries to be some sort of a romantic comedy/drama. It is awful and so is much of the acting. Only Amanda Burton seems to be on the ball as Charles loyal secretary who might also have a thing for Rupert.

A big issue is the characters are hard to root for. Macnee who at one point turns up wearing a bowler hat as in the Avengers is a selfish scoundrel. So is his son.

Rupert tears around narrow streets in a Porsche, uses a fake disability badge to park on yellow lines. He cheats on his girlfriend and does not care if his dad's firm goes bust. He does not even like his dad and he supposed to be the heroic lead!
